Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Pours a hazy golden with a rather large head that recedes quickly. Aroma is lemon and wheat, sour and tart. Taking a taste, yup sour and tart. Interesting, good, but not what I look for in a beer.

golden with quickly disappering head. slight spicy and definitely sour nose. thick mouthfeel. flavor is greatly unique with an initial fruity ester flavor from the yeast with a very refreshing tartness from the lactobacillus. a beer that was perfectly fermented, benefitting from proper yeast manipulation to balance the lactic acid. a great brew, from an under-appreciated style.

Pale yellow, wispy head. Grapefruit and citric acid sour aroma. Very drinkable but light in the flavours expected of the style.

Bottle - Suspect a spoiled sample. Yelolow color with no head retention. Tart sweet aroma. Fruity tart flavor with a hint of lemon. This style is sometimes mixed with a syrup. I’d suggest doing that if this is how it tastes..

Hazy lemony yellow, witbierish appearance. Grainy aroma, wet dog, leaves, lightly tart fruit (gummy bears). Empty grainy flavor, tart, undersweetened. Surprisingly transparent flavor, very clean, no aftertaste whatsoever, no yeast development. Almost imperceptible bitterness, very sharp carbo. Dry lemonade, uninteresting.

1 pint .9 fl oz bottle. Pours a cloudy, yellow-gold body with a big, bubbly and fizzy, pure white head that dissipates quickly and surprisingly leaves no lacing. Very pretty at first, but almost looks like piss after the head fades. Disappointing. Aroma is initially wheat and lemons. Some other sweet fruits show up after a few sniffs such as cherries and lime. Lots of sweet tart citrus. Slightly yeasty. Flavor is very bright, sour citrus. Wheat and honey too. Some of the cherry shows up in there as well as the Sprite-like lemon-lime. Palate is light and very fizzy. Not a whole lot of aftertasate. Overall, a very tart beer. Almost drinks like a soda. Not a bad flavor, just not really my style. Too fizzy and acidic. Interesting to say the least...
