Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Bottle. Creamy yellow opaque appearance, doesn’t have a huge head, but still has a decent looking creamy texture white film. Pungent, inviting aroma, yeast-forward with an abundance of lactic acid... spicy and peppery on the nose. Taste is tingling and fizzy up front, spicy yeast initially tasted and then turning more semi-sweet and semi-sour, with wheat and lactose as the dominant flavors. It’s a really refreshing and tasty beer in a style I haven’t sampled much.

This pours a cloudy, pale yellow body with a HUMONGOUS fizzy head that does little of any lacing. The aroma is kind of funky, an underlying bread dough with bitter grasses, lemon, and old yeast. Light and well carbonated, its funkiness continues into the flavor. Along with tastes reflecting the aroma, it has some hand soap, overly ripe bananas, peppery spices, and a lactic sourness. Interesting, refreshing, and repeatable.

Cloudy light straw color with a big bubbled, somewhat fluffy white head that diminishes somewhat quickly in the bowl. Hugh wheat and light banana aromas. A light lactic scent, but not that strong compared to some of the other Berliners. Full wheat sweetness that does not last long with the tartness. Some white grapes and and lemon oil wander about in the middle. Dry tart finish that has some tart cherries and slight return of wheat. Respectable. Wouldn’t mild trying with woodruff or raspberry syrup.

Bottle@Home. Banana and raw rhubarb aroma but quite faint. Hazy, pale yellow color, off-white head, few lace. Citrus sourness, maltsweet, bitter, banana. Light bodied but with the last pour the yeast came what gave it more body. Sour and hops well balanced into one. Thanks DerDoppelbock!

RBSG 07 Minneapolis Grand Tasting: Hazy yellow, light head and lacing. Nose of bright wheat esters, banana and clove, that’s it. The flavor is lightly sweet, just faintly sour. Less sour and more bile though. The finish is clean, but light and tart. A bit of something added to this might do the trick...

Bottle from Keg Liqour. Poured hazy yellow color with a large frothy white head that mostly lasted with fair lacing. Moderate wheat sour fruit aroma. Light to medium body. Light sour fruit flavor with a light sour finish of moderate duration. Interesting, not my style.

Bottle from Capone’s. Cloudy yellowish pour with 1-finger white head. Aroma of heavy tart citrus, some pale malt, hops, and some apple/pear notes. The taste is tart and citric, with some pear and malt notes at mid-palate, and a well rounded mouthfeel which made me crave this the more i sipped it. It stays tart throughout, but has a nice fruitiness and malt presence to countermand the citric tartness.

Bottle. Head is initially small, fizzy/frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy medium yellow, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of lemon zest, clove, apple skin, banana. Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively/fizzy carbonation. Not sour enough IMHO, but still nicely balanced. The aroma is quite nice for the style, though certainly showing a fair bit of Weissbier character.
