Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Hazy yellow pour with a fizzy white head that fades quickly. Grassy, yeasty aroma with some sourness and a hint of clove. Mostly crisp wheat flavor with subtle yeast and clove notes. Lingering sourness on the finish. Medium body with lots of carbonation.

[bottle] Poured cloudy gold with a large, soapy white head. Pretty sour flavor dominates. Wheat and yeast comes through at the end. Light mouthfeel.

Bottle courtesy of Degarth. Not sure how this one eluded me for so long, but here we have it. Orange juice looking body, just a hint of a head, mainly foamy bubbles atop the liquid. Nose is pretty straightforward, some yeast, but mostly lemons, oranges and other citrus. Very tart on the nose, really awakens the senses. Flavor carries over all of that, very refreshing and palate cleansing. Light bodied, never watery, lively carbonation and an excellent mouthfeel. Finish is lengthy, tart and very crisp. November in Florida can still be pretty hot, and this was consumed on such a night, so it was very nice. Thank you Dr. Fritz Briem, whoever you are.

500ml bottle. Aroma: Wheat malt, lemon, peach, and some lightly dusty funk. Appearance: Lemony yellow in color and quite hazy. Bright white head was full and foamy with great retention. Good lacing. Flavor: Bready wheatiness is cut short by the lactic sourness. Sourness is just right. Some lemon and apple notes through the sour. Some very light dusty funk in the background. Finishes very dry. Palate: Light body. Medium-high carbonation. Overall: Very nice. Drinkable and refreshing with just enough bite.

Pale yellow with a cloudy head. Aroma is wheaty with bubble gum and banana only with some sourness in there as well. Flavor is tart and creamy. This is a good representative of the style.

Draft at Hamiltons. Pours a luminescent, almost glow-in-the-dark, cloudy neon yellow hue with quickly dissipating head and no lacing. Nose is lactic sourness with a hint of barnyard funk, light fruits, wheat. Flavor is lemon-orange zest amplified by the effervescence, light sourness and funk midway with a backbone of light wheatiness, finishes spritzy sweet. Light-body, thin texture, high level of carbonation. Tastes like a slightly sour mimosa, wheat and citrus dominate while lactic sour takes a back seat, a nice easy drinking bubbly drink that falls a bit short for the style.

Available at the Cellar’s Lex/Larp. pours a super cloudy straw like deep yellow, with a massive creamy white head. Nice biscuity sweet malt as well as some citrus rind and banana. Super tart lemony sweetness with a great creamy body that almost finishes with a wine like acidity.
