Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Pours a hazy straw color with a thin white head - I got the bottom of the bottle. Aroma is yeasty, with some slight sour and tart characteristics. Flavor is much the same. I was hoping that it would be a bit more tart and dryer.

This beer pours a cloudy orange, it almost looks like a grapefruit juice considering it has that nice citric and bitter aroma to it. The head foams up really nice and as fast as it foams up it fades to nothing. The initial taste is very salty and tangy but that fades as quick as the beer goes down your throat. the after taste on the palate is very smooth and toffee like with mild hints of melon.

50 cl bottle. Poured a hazy golden yellow in color with a medium sized white head. Aroma of wheat, funky yeast, and light citrus. Fizzy carbonated body with flavors of yeast, mild citrus, wheat, and little tart funkiness. Very nice Berliner Weisse.

Poured a hazy yellow colour with a very active fizzy white head. Head instantly diminished to a ring. Aroma presents funky yeast, light fruit, citrus and spices. Initial taste is tangy, a salty wheat makes up the background character of this brew. Moving into a lightly spiced citrus. Palate duration cuts short and is slightly dry. A light body, but refreshing and enjoyable.

Bottle- Nice gold pour with small head which fizzed down fairly quick. Good carbonation, thin lacing. Lemon/citrus tartness that was balanced by the wheat malt, good mouth feel. For the style I would say very good, another I would look for again and cellar.

( 500ml bottle) pours a cloudy yellow, great head. Nose is sweet, sour, with spices, and some tarness. The taste is very tart in a great way, lemon zest, very carbonated with a nice light body and a very easy drinking beer. Nothing here disappointed. Like a sour without being overly so!

Hazy yellow color when poured, an almost violent carbonation when poured, thick rocky head. I don’t get the citrus notes, instead I get hints of passion fruit, with a wisp of cloves. Slightly tart flavor, no where near the punch of Berliner Kindl. Solid brew, think I will age some bottles to see where we go....

Poured hazy yellow with white head that dissipated pretty quickly. Aroma of lemons with some oranges. Big citrus flavor that was rather smooth. Refreshing.
