Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

From a bottle purchsed at John’s in Iowa City. The label says 5% abv. I used a hefe glass and this poured with a light straw color that was slightly hazy. The bubbles were fast moving and this created a rocky textured large white head. The aroma is similar to lemon bread, but a little more intense. There is a hint of hay to go along with the obvious tart lemon smell. The taste is mildly sour with some lemon drops and a little bit of clove. The fruit esters come out clearly as you drink a little more, definite notes of banana and kiwi. This would be a great warm weather beer with the refreshing citrus and smooth, light body. Interesting and drinkable.

Bottle from South Bay Drug. Hazy lemon gold color with a very large white head. Aromas of yeast and citrus. Medium body with frothy carbonation. Quite zesty in a citrus mode. Slightly lactic. Slighty bitter. Astringent. Puckerish. Probably prevents scurvy.

Thank Tom for the bottle: Pours a clean golden hue with a lasting fizzy head and good lace. The aroma has notes of wheat and pale malt, moderate sour apple, hint of banana ester, some funk and wood as well. The taste is much more reserved that I would have thought. The sourness is there but hardly palate crushing as I would have initially guessed. A nice interplay of sour, bitter, and wheat along the ride. This is quite the refreshing and spritzy summer brew. A solid offering but I really did want more teeth grinding pucker power than this did provide.

Bottled. Poured a slightly hazy paler golden with a creamy white head and lively carbonation. Aroma picked up deep pineapple and pear esters with sweet bananas and sharper, spritzy orange zest.. underlying bready sweet notes. The flavor found a sweet bready pils malt base with ample doses of pineapple and orange.. sourness is rather mild, but very well-done.. more milky pineapple and orange toward the bottom of the bottle. Grainy wheat notes on the palate pair very well with the rather mild sourness.. lighter-bodied and oh-so refreshing! Great stuff!

Amazingly refreshing sour power. This is not for reveryone, beautiful creamy appearance with light yellow/beige body. All the foam cuddles the tart product in creaminess and malt. And all this at 5%

Bottle (500ml). Cloudy yellow, huge foamy white lasting head. Sour fruit, yeast, funky spice, I get the lactic character. Oh, my that’s nice - light wheat beer, with mildly acidic fruit (strawberry!), and lemon sourness and yeast .... really pleasant. Light body, carbonation and acidity, quick finish, but while it’s on your palate it’s a nice ride.

Bottle 500ml
Appearance: Thick, cloudy, autumn fog like . Milky honey gold in color. Fine fizzy top.
Nose : fruity wheat character , stronger than usually found hints of alcohol. Sweet gooseberry feel and red apple. Yeasty ,esters ending show. 7+
Flavor/Palate : Soft sourness , citric , wheat grain oriented ale. Softer , smoother at finish. Tart front with wheat midlle. Good Berliner.
