Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Bottle @ Rudolf’s ’Sourfest’. Crisp yellow body with a small white head. Yeasty corn on the cob aroma. Grainy, very light sourness in the flavour. Average palate. Pretty dull - I never thought I would catch myself wanting something to be MORE sour! Perhaps my tongue had been deadened by the stiffer fare surrounding it.

This Berliner Weisse pours a medium yellow gold color from a 50cl bottle. Small sized white foamy head. The aroma is tart lemons, yeast and some malts. A medium bodied Berliner Weise The malts are cereal and grain, some papaya and orange. Its tart, but not overpoweringly tart. Lively carbonation. A nice tart and refreshing summer beer. The lower alcohol content would make this a nice summer session beer. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly tart.

Oh oh. Way off the curve on this one. This bottled brew from Indianapolis, IN poured a large sized head of fizzy foamy white colored mostly diminishing finely sized bubbles that left behind a carbonated slightly hazy yellow colored body. The aroma was of mild grass and soap with a hint of malt. The mouth feel was tingly and acidic from start to finish. The flavor contained notes of acidic malts. Mark for a re rate. I suspect poor handling here.

500ml bottle: Quite fizzy on the pour, but then quickly fades to a silent stillness with just a bare head of tiny bubbles. Reflects the color of unfiltered pineapple juice, and the aroma darn near starts making me think this is a fruit punch. It’s not quite that sweet, though, pretty tart I suppose, but not nearly as puckering as I’d expected depending on all the smack talk about the style (this is the first Berliner I’ve had in the 5 yrs I’ve been on RB). Instead, it’s pleasantly sweet and lightly tart, and quite drinkable. Why would anyone put fruit syrup in this? (#2993, 6/27/2007)

This hard to get in Germany bottle was kindly provided by DerDoppelbock. Milky yellow, low white blanket head. Acidic fresh, light citric aroma. Citrus buttermilk flavor, restrained tart, a hint of anisseed. Light body as it befits the style, sparkly mouthfeel. Dry cleansing finish with a slightly citric aftertaste. Very pleasant drink.

Poured a cloudy golden color with a medium sized, tight, creamy, white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of tart citrus, banana, clove, hay, sweat, and lemongrass. More lemongrass in the taste, with some banana, clove, buttercream, citrus, vanilla, toffee, and a lactic sourness. Sour finish as well.

Nearly clear yellow color with a thick head. A tart and lemony aroma as well as some wheat. Slight tartness and dry malt up front, followed on by wheat, lemon and banana. Not overly tart or sour, but just enough to freshen it up a bit. Lovely.
