Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

One of my contributions via trade long time ago from someone, thankee kindly. My 2nd rating, somewhere around beer 5 of 2nd Belgian Beer Club shindig. Pours clear yellow with a bright white head. The nose was wheaty and tart. The taste is sweet, tart, sticky, and sour. Very tasty overall the sourness is nice.

Bottle (trade with mgumby). Lemon, milk and wheat malt aroma - very nice-makes my mouth water. Cloudy orange-yellow color with nice head intially but fades rather quickly. Initially a brief sweet orange/cherry flavor that quickly changes to a lIght lemon sour tartness well blended with wheat malt. Much less of a tart punch than either Berliner Kindl or Schulteiss that really pucker your mouth. A brilliant beer - definitely something to try. Added some waldmeister (sweet woodruff) syrup to the last few sips to see how it would do - blends very nicely but due to less sourness, the waldmeister takes a much more prominent role than with Berliner Kindl/Schultheiss where the tartness comes out more.

in the 500 mL bottle from John’s grocery. pours a canary yellow with a thick bright white head that lasts a while then subsides to a thin white film. aroma is a bit lemony. something of unsweetened grapefruit juice. the beer has as very dry taste. it is crisp and tart. has a great refreshing lemon flavor with grapefruit sourness and bitterness at the finish. there is no weird or bad off flavors to this beer. when you smell the yeastcake in the bottom of the bottle, you get a great banana aroma.

RBSG 07. Light wheat aroma. Cloudy yellow appearance.Flavor is on the sour side, but not nearly as sour as the Fitgers Berliner. The sourness is on the light side, fairly refreshing. This beer has some typical wheat beer character with citrus and light banana. Very good.

Pours with a large, foamy white head covering a clear fizzy yellow body. Aroma of hay, honey and wheat. Taste is lemony in the finish and quite refreshing. Taste is also strong on the wheat with nearly a touch of clove in the tart finish. Quite pleasant. Not as sour or tart as other Berliner Weisses that I have had. Lively bubbles with a dry mouthfeel.

The pour reveals a cloudy golden color with a thick white head that diminishes to a thin one. The aroma is very sharp and promises a refreshing flavor, there’s sourness, bananas, maybe citrus, cloves and bubble-gummy yeast. In the mouth, there’s a highly refreshing sour flavor with fruits, cloves and bubble-gummy yeast. The body is light to medium with an oily texture and medium to lively carbonation. Hmmm, too bad this style is hard to find, especially in North-America, I really like berliner=weisses and this one is very good.

Bottle from Winking Lizard. Served with a cup of raspberry syrup which I declined. Pours a somewhat hazy yellow-gold color with a medium thin bone white head that diminishes slowly. Patches of lacing on the glass. Tart fruit, doughy malt and spices in the nose. Light-bodied and clean with a tart citrus and raspberry character. Mild spices and grainy malt flavors as well. The finish is fruity with a lingering tartness afterward. Overall this is pretty interesting.

In short: On of the most refreshing and tart beer this side of the lambics. The ultimate lemonade for the beer lover.
How: Bottle, fresh, drank the day of purchase
The look: cloudy yellow with a little with ring of foam
In long: Aroma of lemon pie with meringue. Fluffy body offering lots of hay, lemon skin, lemonade concentrate, granny smith apples and bananas. This is a very tasty beer and it is very very tart. The tartness/acidity is such that it makes this little 5% Berliner Weisse almost a sipper. The type of beer that I was thinking of a high-3 rating while drinking it because after all this is “just a little refreshing beer” but woke up the day after obsessing about it. On a hot summer day this beer will be as welcomed as air conditioning and satellite tv by Abu Ghraib prisoners.
