Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

In short: On of the most refreshing and tart beer this side of the lambics. The ultimate lemonade for the beer lover.
How: Bottle, fresh, drank the day of purchase
The look: cloudy yellow with a little with ring of foam
In long: Aroma of lemon pie with meringue. Fluffy body offering lots of hay, lemon skin, lemonade concentrate, granny smith apples and bananas. This is a very tasty beer and it is very very tart. The tartness/acidity is such that it makes this little 5% Berliner Weisse almost a sipper. The type of beer that I was thinking of a high-3 rating while drinking it because after all this is “just a little refreshing beer” but woke up the day after obsessing about it. On a hot summer day this beer will be as welcomed as air conditioning and satellite tv by Abu Ghraib prisoners.

Bottle from Whole Foods 14th Stl., Just a smidge better than the Dogfish Festina Peche. Specifically, the 1809 is slightly maltier and just as citrusy/sour as the Dogfish (they were tried side-by-side). A bit thicker and richer than the Dogfish, though I prefer the Berliner Weisses that I sampled in Berlin in June 2007 - the Berliner Kindl and the Schultheiss were knockouts!

(Rating #2712)

Excited to see this beer show up in our market, we don’t get many Berliner Weisses in town, so this was a treat. Cloudy yellow pour with a small white head. Tart lemon citrus nose. Wheaty and excellent lemony sourness. Perfectly drinkable and refreshing.

500. Thanks, HogFodder! Tasty stuff. Nice to see it’s available in town (for) now. Cloudy lemony amber with a towering, fluffy platinum blonde head that quickly falls away to a little ring of white foam. Minimal lacing. Dusty, lemony nose. Medium-thick and quite tingly body. Plenty of carb, enough that it’s surprising that hardly any really shows in the glass. Tart lemony acidulence on the mid-palate; this flavor profile could use a bit of help. There’s grass there, maybe a bit of hay, but not much else to keep the lemony sourness company. But at least the sourness does have that lemony overtone. Light, refreshing, and clingy tart finish. Good stuff.

Courtesy of Degarth. Pours a straw gold with bright white head. The aroma has some punch with fruitiness from apples, peaches and mango mixed with hay, grains and mild funk. The taste begins tart with lemon, mild burlap funk and grains. The experience just smooths out into the finish creating a refreshing sensation. Very nice summer brew.

My experience with Berliner Weisse is very limited, but the few I’ve had have been overwhelmingly tart with the flavor around the edges, if that makes any sense. Still good of course, but tart more than anything. This one, however, was extremely flavorful - it smelled mildly like toast and lemon, and the flavor was a mix of some citrus notes, some herbal, savory notes, some hints of sourdough bread and just a touch of bitterness, mixed with an understated but persistant tartness. Awesome stuff, I wish I had a case or two of it. Thanks to ross for the trade!

Aroma of some light banana, clove, and a good amount of lemon. Hazy light yellow pour with a huge head. Big bubbly carbonation. Initial hefe flavors of fruity esters followed by big tart and acidic lemon notes. Incredibly thirst quenching. Nicely tart. Some nice stuff here! I love that it can be so flavorful, yet so quaffable and light.
