Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Hazy straw colored, with a big white head that diminishes quickly. Interesting nose--sweet, fairly bready, with a twinge of tartness and maybe just a hint of bubblegum. Nice, quick biting tartness gives way to a complex cereal flavor--like good granola or meusli. A bit too effervescent.

Bottle from Whole Foods 14th Stl., Just a smidge better than the Dogfish Festina Peche. Specifically, the 1809 is slightly maltier and just as citrusy/sour as the Dogfish (they were tried side-by-side). A bit thicker and richer than the Dogfish, though I prefer the Berliner Weisses that I sampled in Berlin in June 2007 - the Berliner Kindl and the Schultheiss were knockouts!

Good white foam on hazy yellow body. Light lemony flavor. Sourness is very subdued, hardly deserving of a syrup to cut it. Drinkable; very nice.

From a bottle purchsed at John’s in Iowa City. The label says 5% abv. I used a hefe glass and this poured with a light straw color that was slightly hazy. The bubbles were fast moving and this created a rocky textured large white head. The aroma is similar to lemon bread, but a little more intense. There is a hint of hay to go along with the obvious tart lemon smell. The taste is mildly sour with some lemon drops and a little bit of clove. The fruit esters come out clearly as you drink a little more, definite notes of banana and kiwi. This would be a great warm weather beer with the refreshing citrus and smooth, light body. Interesting and drinkable.

I’m pretty sure that this is my first Berliner Weisse, at least one that I’m sitting down and trying to enjoy. Very cloudy, dark golden colored, slight head around the sides of the glass. Aroma is very wheaty and lemony. Full aroma, and very pleasant. The flavor is quite good - full wheatiness and refreshing lemony tartness. Crisp. Tasty. Nice.

RBSG 07. Light wheat aroma. Cloudy yellow appearance.Flavor is on the sour side, but not nearly as sour as the Fitgers Berliner. The sourness is on the light side, fairly refreshing. This beer has some typical wheat beer character with citrus and light banana. Very good.

Large frothy white head, cloudy pale yellow body. Sweet wheaty lemon aroma. Flavor is a little sour wheat with some juicy fruit popscicles. Very full flavor. Nice combination of sweet and sour wheat... nicely rounded and balanced with some cherry too. Good stuff.

MMMMMMM Very pale hazy straw color with a fizzy white head. Aroma of a raw honey sweetness, wheaty wanginess, and a sour yeasty funkiness. The flavor is much the same as the aroma , sour, tart, fruity, wheaty, crisp, and very refreshing. This was a very pleasant surprise, bought on a whim with no expectations. I will definitely buy again!
