Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Amazingly refreshing sour power. This is not for reveryone, beautiful creamy appearance with light yellow/beige body. All the foam cuddles the tart product in creaminess and malt. And all this at 5%

Bottle courtesy of Dan- Slightly hazy golden color, thin white head sits atop. Nose is Slightly tart, cereal character, subtle barnyard character come through Lemon, a little alcohol. Drinking this is just slightly tart, complex it has something to it despite its size. The finish is champagne-esque in its dry and tart character.

Pours clear yellow with a tiny head. Aroma is lemon and wheat. Mouth feel is lively for a brew with such a small head. Flavor is tart but not overpowering. Nice citrus and bread flavors are present. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this style, but I like it. A very pleasant surprise.

500ml Bottle. A very fresh, fragrant and floral aroma. Coarsely crushed white pepper mingles with orchid blossom. Musky dragonfruit and lychee blow through. Spring breezes elicit warm bread. Nice. Pours a well hazed straw-bale tinted gold. Light opalescence and a dirty tinge. Rim in clean, sparse, fast-fading rocky white. Flavor is luxurious. A peppery, bright blend of soft wheat sugars, snappy bog-like tang, and crisp French bread crust. Nice balance all around. White table grapes fuse with plum sugars and quite fresh doughy bread to create a real interesting blend. Lactic tang is rather minimal but present, giving it a delicious, curt acidity that keeps it refreshing and clean. Not amazingly complex. Fresh, lively and well-built. A nice rendition.

Grapefruit and other fruity aromas off this hazy yellow pour with a really nice head. Flavors were tart fruits with cherry, lemon, and grapefruit mostly. Definitely easier to drink than the other Berliner I had. Very good. Can’t imagine needing syrup with this beer.

16.9 oz. bottle. Pours a pale yellow-gold with a moderate-large white head that lasted through the first third of the glass and left a few spots of lace. Very pleasant aroma of lemos with a few notes of wheat. The lemon aroma is both mildly tart and sweet. The flavor is equally lovely with lemon that is again both tart and sweet along with some wheat and yeast. Nicely carbonated and lively on the palate. This is a thoroughly enjoyable beer.

As an aside, I would like to try using this beer to make a sorbet. I’ve made champagne sorbet, which is excellent as an intermezzo. I think this beer would be excellent for that.

[bottle] Grainy, lactic aroma... very intriguing. Pale yellow color, hazy, with a very nice off-white head. Excellent head retention. Lactic acid dominates the flavors up front, with some more grainy wheat and lemony tartness. Very clean, dry finish. Powerful carbonation. Really quite awesome overall-- super drinkable, this would be a beer I could drink all summer long.

100th user rating of this fine beer. I have been fortunate to drink three bottles in the past month and now its available at my local package store. Aroma is fruity and tart with some wheat undertones. Flavor is fruity with a lactic acidity and dry, wheaty (hefe-like) finish. A very nice summer beer.
