Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Cloudy pale golden color with a frothy white head. Aroma is full of pale grains, wheat and citric tartness, straw, lemon and grassy notes. Flavor is sour, moderately acidic, freshly-squeezed lemons, lime and wheat grains. Small bodied, sticky texture. Long tart finish.

Bottle shared by Blake, brought back from the blasted wastelands of his homeland, "Iowa". Cloudy yellow body under a fluffy white head. Tart acidic aroma - lemon and sugar cookie. The flavor has similar acidic notes over husky pale malt. A solid beer, tart and refreshing.

3rd LCRBM. This will get a re-rate soon, because of a trade with Der Doppelbock, but first impressions are these: yoghurt and, surprisingly, some hops in the aroma. Very modestly sour flavor with yoghurt, fresh cheese and traubenzucker. Citrus. Thin, but complex and delicious. Re-rate: First rating was fairly accurate. Lychee in the somewhat citric aroma. A slight lemony sourness with tropical fruit added. pineapple, lychee, traubenzucker. Good complexity is this delicious and characterful beer, that is way less sour as the Berliner Weisse from Schultheiss or Kindl.

Very interesting fruitiness. There’s something there reminiscent of a lambic, but mostly, it’s just the hefe fruit. There’s a green apple and lime tartness in the finish of this one. Not full on sourness, though. Almost a hint of mint in the aroma. Right now, it’s nicely balanced with a good wheat backbone. Very cloudy pour.

Bright gold appearance with a tiny, gray head and sparce lacing. Aroma of wheat and tart fruit, thinking lemons and green apples. Wheaty, astringent taste; sour, but not in the same vein as a Flemish sour. This one is unique, as if a spritzy white wine had started to turn. Dry, medium bodied, well carbonated mouthfeel. Lingering, fruity, finish. A real palate cleanser.

Clear yellow, white head fades fast, big bubbles. Honestly resembles Bud, I can’t help it. Aroma light, a bit of grain, faint funk, and dust, interesting. Sour fruity apple flavor over a wheat base. Refreshing, gentle bacterial funk. Very refreshing, a bit of lemon on the finish. Like a less agressive lambic. Nice.
