Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Sour bananas and citrus, some funk. Pours cloudy yellow with a white head. Tart banana, sour citrus fruits like kumquats, sweet and dry finish. Very refreshing! Very creamy mouthfeel.

Bottle. Pours hazy yellow with white head. The aroma has lots of hay, some acidic zest, orange, and a hint of barnyard. The flavor is tart and acidic right away, but not puckeringly so. Some sweet, citrusy notes are there, too. It then becomes very herbal and some malt tones start to work their way in. It finishes slightly musty with some yeast and spicy wheat, but still leaves a tingling acidic feel in the mouth. This is very refreshing, really.

Nicely tart and exceptionally quenching, I hope this style continues to be revitalized, and become more readily available. Golden yellow color, soapy head and streaky lacing with tight carbonation. Applesauce and lime aromas followed by saltine crackers and sugar cookies. Zesty, lightly sour and easy to throw back. Green apple, light peach and lemon peel fruit flavors with dry wheat and grass. Good profile, very calming and approachable.

Poured from a 500ml bottle and served in a tumbler. This beer poured a hazy golden with a thick, fizzy head of off-white foam and a ton of dancing carbonation bubbles. Solid retention, leaving behind some decent lace. The aroma of the beer was a simple blend of wheat, tart lemon, and grass. The flavor was similar but also displayed a nice crispness and a moderate sourness. Some lime and peach also show up in the finish. The mouthfeel was crisp and light-bodied. Highly carbonated. Fruity and refreshing. An excellent beer for a hot day.

500 ml bottle courtesy of pepsican. Pours a cloudy yellow-orange color with a small white head that soon dissipates. No lacing. The aroma is relatively mild with wheat, sour papaya and some honey. The flavor is sweet and sour lemons, honey and melons rounding out the sides. The mouthfeel is silky with lively carbonation. The finish is dry, short and clean. Overall: This is a superb thirst quencher. Loved it.

Pours pale golden with no head. The nonse is full and complex. The flavor is sweet on the tip of the tongue, with subtle mid to finish.

Pours hazy light gold with a frothy head. Aroma of breat, yeast, and banana. Initial taste is sour with strong notes of bread and banana. Medium light mouthfeel. My first Berliner Weisse. Won’t be the last.
