Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Pours hazy light gold with a frothy head. Aroma of breat, yeast, and banana. Initial taste is sour with strong notes of bread and banana. Medium light mouthfeel. My first Berliner Weisse. Won’t be the last.

Bottle- Nice gold pour with small head which fizzed down fairly quick. Good carbonation, thin lacing. Lemon/citrus tartness that was balanced by the wheat malt, good mouth feel. For the style I would say very good, another I would look for again and cellar.

[bottle] Poured cloudy gold with a large, soapy white head. Pretty sour flavor dominates. Wheat and yeast comes through at the end. Light mouthfeel.

Pours a crystal clear yellow, very high carbonation and a dense bubbly white head that fades down fairly quickly. Aroma has a very light acidic sourness to it, not as much as I expected, with a green apple/white grape sweetness, light hay note, cheesy and farmhouse scent finish it out. Flavor starts off with a light sweet grape and mild lemon citric acid flavor but quickly moves into a sour, wet straw and farmhouse flavor with a refreshing tartness to the finish. Brew ends with a very dry, tongue puckering/numbing feeling. Density is perfectly light but heavy enough to carry the wide array of flavors for the entire tasting. Beer has a high effervescent feel with its high carbonation. I was expecting something way more soured and acidic for this styling. Overall a very good brew with a very wide range of flavors that fade into one another and work superbly.

Bottle. Pours a lemonade color with almost no head. Aroma of wheat crisp, lightt lemon, some dirty sponge, a but funky, but all good stuff. Dry crisp apple cider. Flavor starts very fruity, crisp, cidery dry and sharp. a bit champagne like in the finish, dry and crisp. Medium body and a sharp but non obtrusive carbonation. Really interesting beer, complex but drinkable.

Bottle. Pours a murky and milky straw yellow with a large creamy white head. Sweet, a little bit of mustard, hay, a little bit of papery grains. Nice crisp sourness up front, light acid. Finishes with some slow lingering tartness and a lot of effervescence.

In bottle. Frothy white head, golden (almost amber), clear until the very end of the pour. Simple lemony, yeasty flavor and aroma, with little aftertaste. Quite refreshing. Second bottle of ten bought Feb 2009.
