Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

0.5L bottle. Unfiltered and yellow in color, white fizzy head. Aroma of peach, orange, and green banana. Flavor is of tartness and malt. Slight cereal flavors in the finish. A bit strong for this style but still refreshing.

A very drinkable berliner weisse. Still tart and tangy, but not overwhelmingly so. Serious lemon and lime notes, with a delightful effervescence. Top-notch stuff.

500ml bottle. This beer is fun. Hazy bright pale pink pour with a slightly pink tint, I think. Bubbly frothy white head. Yeasty tart lemon, zest, and yeast as well as citrus and bread. Lovely sour dry finish. Refreshing as hell. If this were cheaper, I’d drink it all summer long...

Poured a cloudy golden color with a medium sized, tight, creamy, white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of tart citrus, banana, clove, hay, sweat, and lemongrass. More lemongrass in the taste, with some banana, clove, buttercream, citrus, vanilla, toffee, and a lactic sourness. Sour finish as well.

Pour is a cloudy yellow body with a thin white head. Sharply tart with lemon and maybe some peach skin. Refreshing and delicious.

Bottle: Big wheaty aroma with lemon, clove, and a touch of grass. It pours a cloudy yellow with a moderate white head that lasts a minute or so. The flavor has lots of mildly sour lemon up front with some faint banana. The finish is lightly acidic along with some grassy hops and a touch of smoke. The mouthfeel is somewhat thin and soft but the carbonation is rather lively, but not prickly. I see myself drinking a lot of this during the summer. Very tastey and refreshing.

16.9 oz bottle. Pours slightly cloudy (with minimal chunks of yeast) and a huge big-bubble head that disappears almost instantaneously. Very effervescent but not like champagne. Aroma is chock full of light fruits (grape, pear, apple), wheat, lemon citrus, all with a distinctive sour note. Taste is similar. No hint of hops, DMS, diactyl, etc. Sour on the palate but not puckering like a lambic would be. Knocked a few points off overall impression because this is 5% ABV and the style is typically about half that. A good beer, nevertheless; very refreshing although almost too big to be a session beer (and probably too sour for most people to consume as a session!).
