Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

16.9 oz bottle. Pours slightly cloudy (with minimal chunks of yeast) and a huge big-bubble head that disappears almost instantaneously. Very effervescent but not like champagne. Aroma is chock full of light fruits (grape, pear, apple), wheat, lemon citrus, all with a distinctive sour note. Taste is similar. No hint of hops, DMS, diactyl, etc. Sour on the palate but not puckering like a lambic would be. Knocked a few points off overall impression because this is 5% ABV and the style is typically about half that. A good beer, nevertheless; very refreshing although almost too big to be a session beer (and probably too sour for most people to consume as a session!).

500ml bottle. Wow. Very pale pour with tons of bubbles and a lovely white, crisp head. Nose is deep and complex, banana esters and lactic tartness, vanilla and a hint of cocoa. Supremely refreshing, slight tartness still significant in the flavor, with a very wheaty and dry finish. Incredibly drinkable; I could session this stuff all day. Brilliantly done. I looked forward to the other "historic signature series" brews mentioned on the label.

Bottle courtesy of The_Epeeist, thanks Chris! Pours a cloudy golden straw color with a thick pillowy white head. Aroma is grainy, pale malts, yeast, some citrus. Flavor is citrus, grains, pale malt, yeast. Palate is medium to light bodied, medium carbonation, finishes tart and tangy. Good stuff, on a hot day!!

Hazy yellow orange pour with a fizzy short lasting white head. Aroma of lights fruits, yeast, light sour elements, and a bit of pale malt. Flavor was of crisp green apple skin...tart and lightly fruity and sour with musty yeast and pale malt evening out the equation. Fairly light body yet heavy in flavor and texture...sort of creamy yet carbonated well...malty and fruity in the front with a tart/fruity/sour...and almost hearty finish. Really neat stuff.

Bottle bought from West Lakeview in Chicago. There have been lots of talk about this beer and I was excited to finally try it. Pale yellow/white kind of like dark white wine or apple juice and BUBBLY white head, kind of like champagne. Aroma of light lager, mixed with complex fruitiness, sourness, very unassuming. Sip...Oh my goodness, this is crazy, sour, geuze like, pineapple, apple, sweetness but not too much. Light body, with lots of carb. I’m glad to see that such obscure styles are taking off.

Available at the Cellar’s Lex/Larp. pours a super cloudy straw like deep yellow, with a massive creamy white head. Nice biscuity sweet malt as well as some citrus rind and banana. Super tart lemony sweetness with a great creamy body that almost finishes with a wine like acidity.

Bottle. Pours a pale, cloudy gold with quickly receding white head. Aroma of lactic sourness, citrus, and yeastiness. Upon tasting, the sourness immediately comes into play, followed by lemon tartness. Then it beautifully segues into typical wheat/yeasty flavors. The finish is pretty yeasty as well. At one point after having taken a sip, I could still taste lemons in the corner of my mouth. Pretty awesome. Lively/carbonated mouthfeel. Definitely an awesome session brew. I should stock up on more of these as soon as I finish all the other stuff in the fridge.
