Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Pours bright gold into a bowl snifter. White head quickly subsides to hug rim. Slight malt to no aroma. Crisp with upfront sour wheat and a tart sour apple lactic finish.

50 cl bottle. Poured a hazy golden yellow in color with a medium sized white head. Aroma of wheat, funky yeast, and light citrus. Fizzy carbonated body with flavors of yeast, mild citrus, wheat, and little tart funkiness. Very nice Berliner Weisse.

50cl bottle poured into a long, thin glass. Small, fizzy bubbles abound. Kind of subdued, slightly sour aroma with an impression of peaches. More sour peaches in the flavor, very dry and tart. Highly carbonated and dry, perfect mouthfeel for this style. Highly refreshing and very good. Edit: This has improved after 6+ months. Really a softer a better mouthfeel, and more richness in the flavor.

My 500th rating! thanks dsnowden for the bottle! Opaque golden/yellow color. Aroma is very fruity, peaches, and mango, and banana, and some wheat funk. Flavour is sour, and tart, not lambic sour, but still there is a sourness. And i’m getting the fruit again in the flavour, with a nice hefe finish. Wow. i really like this stuff, great summer beer. I wish i could get this on a regular basis!

Milky yellow body, a wonderfully sturdy, and citric tartness that is quenched by this refreshing beer.

A real treat, a super refreshing take on a hefeweizen, much more drinkable than the few Berliners I’ve had (either too fruity or in the case of Kindl, too puckering from what I remember?), unless my buds have just evolved. Poured a like a hefe, huge large head, cloudiness from the yeast swirl, yet more cloudy / murky than flat out sedimenty. The head was pillowy, great lacing. The aroma was much like a hefe, some tart lemons around more than the normal citrus plays of a hefe. Cloves detectable and very light bananas noticeable. Flavor followed, nice tart/bret accent to this whole thing, played quite welll alongside the clove spicing of the base beer. Mouthfeel was full bodied, yet light and clean after the swallow, the citrus/acidity preventing the sweeter malts from sticking around much. Glad to have picked this one up, a great match for the warmest day in the area in months. Maybe I can do a horizontal now with the single other Berliner I can get and haven’t had for a couple of years, Kindl (yup, I’ve got lots of Berliner Wiesse depth, eh?). Re-rate, 8/08, in a horizontal against Kindl, Bahnhof, and DFH Peche. This one took the blue as expected. Original review stands, definitely elements of both hefe and Berliner Weisse, an overall great drinker. Numbers remain unchanged.

Pours cloudy dirty yellow with a one inch effervescent white head. Aroma is tangy sour notes of grape skins and apple with bit of citrusy lemon zest. Flavor is initially sharply bitter/sour/citrusy and then mellows to the lightly sour wheat flavor with a nice tangy dry finish. Ample carbonation and lively body. Exceedingly drinkable though a tad stronger w/ more body than some other examples.
