Commercial Description:
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens, “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Thanks to joebrew for sharing. Cloudy lemonade color with white head. Wheat and citrus and banana on the nose. Faint cloves as well. Light tart flavor. Light wheaty body.

Bottle shared with fordest. Very good tasting and very drinkable. Sour, with hints of cherries, and other sweet fruits. Nice.

While pushing the ABV for a Berliner Weisse, this is still one of my favorites for the style. Beautiful fruity sour character on the nose that carries through to the taste. Gentle sour character in the taste that is perfectly balanced by tropical fruits from the yeast. Very light tartness. Exceedingly drinkable. Nice carbonation level. One of the most complex in the style that I have had and just a beautiful beer.

Bottle: Poured at J.K. O’Donnell’s...very pleasant surprise seeing this on the menu. Cloudy yellow pour with a fluffy white head. Light malted wheat, subtle candy sugar, biscuit and spice in the nose with the lactic notes rounding it out. Wow...first taste on this was incredible, very crisp and champagne-like with huge amounts of sour-y goodness. Wheat and lemongrass flavors also noted.

Pours a very cloudy straw colour with a fizzy head that disipates as quick as soda-pop. The aroma is typically salty with muted hints of barnyard funk from the yeast. A good amount of acidity is felt through the nose. The flavour is mildly tart, salty and acidic with flavours of wheat, citrus, horseblanket, some banana/melon. The palate duration is extremely short and the body is watery with soft messaging carbonation.

A very refreshing lemony beer. Remarkably refreshing and easy to drink. This may be my summer beer of choice this year. I really hope that this style starts becoming more popular as it is a wonderful change of pace to many of the other classical german brews.

Bottle, part of a blind tasting session. Light orange haze with an suggestions of lemon juice in the color. Nose is of yeast and citrus aromatics. First sip is considerably more citrus and tart than your standard wit... which fits the description of the style altho this is my first of its kind. Was very pleased and impressed with its balance.

Fruity and Sour lactic aroma. hazy straw color. Lightly sour and not overpowering at all. Very drinkable for a sour. Bubbly and light.
