pinkzambia (986), Boise, Idaho, USA Nov 3, 2009 Tap @ Porky’s Pizza - San Leandro: Black as black can be for an IPA! An almost Guinness color head, that white/tan look with some mild, sticky lacing at the beginning. Lots of floral aromas - roses, grapes, light mint along with the usual hoppy distinctives. Hoppy flavor abounds. When its too cold it has a tinny aftertaste, but as it warms up it isa great IPA with a warm toasty aroma and a great bitter finish. Tasty. MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Nov 1, 2009 A Sim rate (on tap at Nat’s local - Marshall Stack): Aroma is slightly sweet with an obvious hoppiness. I wish it had some chocolate in that sweetness. It seems bizarre that an IPA would be dark. That’s why I asked the bartender if I could try it. Hmmm, but it did pour a lovely dark brown. I’m not a big hops fan but knew to expect hops in an IPA after all. Nice bitter at the first taste with a chocolatey finish. It’s good. I’m impressed. scrizzz (1252), kirkland, Washington, USA Nov 1, 2009 More black ipas! jet black with a 2 finger sandy head. toffee aroma with abundant earthy hops. toasty grain meets spicy hops. great job. tgncc (796), Bellmore, New York, USA Nov 1, 2009 Updated: Nov 3, 2009Strong hop aroma, floral and earthy hops, some light citrus, after a while, chocolate, roasted malts. Dark brown color, tan head, emits some light through it when held up to a bulb. The flavor is a nice mix of citrus, grapefruit, caramel, resin, and after it warms, a roasty, chocolate quality - decent balance. The finish is purely a resiny hop bittering. The mouthfeel is medium, relatively high carbonation burn. Decent overall. Only a lsight difference between this and a regular IPA, meaning the slight chocolate/roasted quality, and thistakes a while to evince itself. gracefullypunk (272), Washington, USA Nov 1, 2009 Best I’ve had from this brewery. Pours black with a beige head and some lace. Muted hop aromas, floral, roasted malt, and an almost appley smell. Starts out tasting like a porter and ends like an IPA, moving from chocolate and caramel into floral with a grapefruit finish. acblue (50), Seattle, Washington, USA Oct 31, 2009 Draft. Deep black with a small, bubbly head. Aroma is of hops and...something else not as pleasant. I can’t identify it but it’s a bit off. Almost astringent. egajdzis (3602), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 31, 2009 [Draft @ CAH] Dark brown / black with a small, light tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, pine, citrus fruits, some roast, toffee and toast. Taste of citrus fruits, pine, resin, vanilla, toffee, some roast, and a bit of cocoa, with a bitter, grapefruit finish. CaptainCougar (5379), Rockville, Maryland, USA Oct 31, 2009 Updated: Nov 8, 2009On tap at Churchkey in DC: Pours a nearly opaque with a frothy well lacing beige head. Aroma of fresh grapefruity hops and some lightly sweet toasty caramel maltiness. Starts with pretty good fullness and some dark malty sweetness well balanced with a fresh resiny hoppiness before a drier bittersweet finish. A pretty good dark IPA.
