Aug 9, 2009 Draught at the brewpub. This batch is 8.5%abv and reeks of smoke. I like that. Its classification as a smoked instead of a porter should have been a good indication. Like a black rauchbier. There is some roasted malt in the aroma, but pungent smoke runs the show. Chocolatey smoke flavor with a chary earthiness and a dry, roasted finish. Medium bodied with smooth carbonation. It’s refreshing to find a smoked porter that has more than a hint of smoke in it. It almost had too much actually, though I do love it.

Nov 19, 2008 On tap at the brewery. Mahogany edges with a dark brown body bordering black. Minimal lacing, but small clumps of foam stuck to the sides of the glass. Definite Rauchbier quality; smoky, pork-butt with malty maple sweetness. Medium mouthfeel...not terribly thick but enough to make you remember. Taste is smoky roasted pork, BBY, and a touch of chocolate. Very interesting. Try at a family gathering with roasted chicken, tenderloin, anything!!!

Aug 8, 2009 On tap at the brewpub. Dark, almost black, with a medium tan head. Nose was heavy with smoke, roasted malt and as it warmed up bittersweet chocolate. Taste was smoky malt, dry to the finish. This was a very pleasant suprise on our visit.

Feb 2, 2007 Draft. Dark blackish beer with a thin beige head. Low smoky aroma. Earthy, smoky flavor with some malt - not as bacon like as some, but there is a bacon-like component. Fuller bodied. Lingering smoke. Nice.

Feb 21, 2007 Tulip at brewery - Aroma is roasty/burnt dark malts and smoke. Pours bloack with a small head and good lacing. Flavor is a much stronger version of aroma with tons of smoke that reminds me of charcoal and crispy steak fat. Palate is sticky and ashy. Different and really good if you like smoked beer (which I do).

Dec 19, 2008 Pours deep brown with a decent light tan head. Smokey and chocolate nose and flavor, with a smooth smoke influence. Very smooth for the ABV. Dry, salami like smoked finish.

Nov 30, 2008 (10/27/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in San Francisco. The board says 8.5% ABV. Dark brown to black-colored with a beige head. Aroma of smoked meat and some roastiness. Smoky flavor, quite sweet, with malt, some sausages, wood and hints of coffee. Quite full-bodied.

Nov 1, 2009 Pours red black with a thin cappuccino head. Smell is of course smokey with underlying sugars. Tastes much the same, with some vanilla and caramel.
