Red with a beige head. Simple aromas of bubblegum and fruits. The taste was almost pure candy sugar, with not enough fruit taste to balance or provide complexity.

growler, from the brewery. ok, the recipe is updated as of oct/nov 2009. figs, wood, belgian yeast are the dominant aromas. amazing, actually, how the figs come through. that alone makes this beer worth it. taste is very complex and made quite unusual by the presence of figs.body and abv could have been uppped a bit, since it is around 8.5 now. much more interesting than its previous incarnation.

Tap at Mac’s. Deep red/brownish color with a quickly fading head. Sweet, dark fruit aroma and flavor, the figs really come through in the flavor. Tangy finish. Excellent beer.

Numba 5 - On tap at 21st Amendment SF! Appearance: Pours a dark maroon with a thin tan head. Leaves random webby lacing. Aroma: Red apple skins and spicy/sweet Belgian yeast. Taste: Tangy red berrry, oak, cinnamon, spicy hops as well as spicy Belgian yeast. I was looking for the vanilla that was mentioned in the description, but couldn’t find it. I was told I needed at least four glasses before fining it. =-) Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, perfectly carbonated. Overall: Delicious and complex, and very attractive in a tulip glass.

On tap at 21st Amendment during SF Beer Week. Not bad, but really didn’t do it for me overall. Dark blood-like red color with a small off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, dark fruits, sugar, and yeast. Flavor was similar - really fruity with sweet and sour notes as well as some roastiness. Complex for sure, but I don’t think it came together all that well. Fairly full palate. Not too drinkable.

Pours attractive deep reddish brown with a thin medium tan head. Nose is caramel, dried fruits and sticky sweet malt and sugars. The flavor is quite the same, as in a bit too sticky and sweet. It took me 45 minutes to work through a 12 ounce pour. I would have probably rated this one higher if I only had 4 ounces or so, or sitting at home. But in a crowded and load bar setting during SF Beer Week, it was tough to get through.

Draft. Mahogony beer with a light tan head. Sweet malt aroma with raisins and yeast. Rich malt flavor with yeast fig/raisins, and light caramel. Medium-plus bodied. Dried fruit lingers with rich malt, yeast, and some raisins. Very nice.
