The Lure: Wild hay and straw dance to the cadence of the brettanomyces storm. Much funkier than the regular Drie Fonteinen Oude Gueuze.
The Festivities: Diplomatic sourness supports the big-bubbled carbonation and the savage yet intelligent funkiness. Barnyard humidity prevails and imposes itself onto the hay and warped wood. Everything (tartness, dryness, wild yeastiness, citrus flavors) is nicely blended to a medium intensity, yet is enlivened by an inner whirlwind which makes it present a different façade every sip or so.
Transcendence: Opening up the barn after a few days away.
The 6-year-old bottle provided by Luc was fantastic, but a further-aged 8-year-old bottle provided by Olivier showed that this one is only getting better. It is now within divine realms.
ygtbsm94 (10), Ellicott City, Maryland, USA Sep 19, 2008 Bottle from a 75cl bottle; vintage 1998. Poured a light orangey color with a medium bubbly head. Fantastic aroma with a funky barnyard musty note. Taste was a mixed well balanced lemony, tart, and light sour note along with some medium light oak. Without doubt drinkable with almost no acidity and some great carbonation! Mellow, soft, and a well balanced, quite refined Gueuze. Without question an outstanding Gueuze for the ages even after ten years. KimJohansen (4285), Copenhagen V, Denmark Sep 3, 2008 Cloudy golden with huge white short lasting head. Quite thick head for a lambic. Sour aroma with wood, grapefruit, barnyard and leather notes. Sour and very complex flavor with grapefruit, barnyard, wood and hay. Very soft and easyly drunk. I could drink this every moning. Excellent! tertons (100), East Providence, Rhode Island, USA Aug 25, 2008 Thank to YGTBSM94. Easy drinking w/ a slight tart and funk. Balance, complexity, and all fruit notes excell here. Maybe my favorite from 3 Fonteinen. Ageing is working well as of 8/22/08. DA (2468), Portland, Oregon City, Oregon, USA Aug 18, 2008 RBSG 2008. What a treat. Dry and acidic, citrusy and tropical floral notes in the funkiness. The sourness and acidity were very relaxed, the aging mellowed this out very well leaving behind a beautiful mellow cloudy orange brew. ironchefscott (243), long beach, California, USA Aug 16, 2008 thank you dunk!!!! great nose of oak and funk...somewhat subdued funk compared to the younger vintages
glad to have tried it!
