Commercial Description:
With aromas of aged fruitcake, dark spices, raisins, over-roasted sweet malt, Bob's Gnarly Wine is yeasty and "yah Man...pass it around." Tastes of tart currants, port wine, burnt caramel are complex, but inviting. Sure Bob's Gnarly Wine is stronger than most of our beers but hey man, everything gonna be alright.

Golden-amber colour. Big, boozy, burly character. Hot finish and a big chewy, slight vanilla note. There is a lot of smooth sweetness that helps to offset a bit of heat.

Rerate, Sampled as part of a 19 beer blind barleywine tasting on 1/6/07: Hazy copper orange pour with a spotty lacing off-white head. Aroma of lightly toasty and sweet caramel malts with a touch of light fruits. Body starts fairly full, sweet and caramely with a nice mild light fruity balance. An authentic, tasty barleywine.

On tap 1/5/06: Pours a transparent dark copper mahogany with a frothy, well-lacing off-white head. Earthy grainy malty aroma has a hint of grassy, piney hops hiding underneath. Body starts with a full viscous toasty crystal maltiness with an oily palate revealing some cooked vegetable flavor (DMS) before a sticky, somewhat fruity, mildly tart finish. Hides it’s abv well, but the tartness and DMS are unwanted.

On tap at 5 Seasons. Poured clear caramelly-amber with a creamy cap of beige head. The aroma picked up well-aged caramel, toffee, and brown sugary note with a warm and heavy (but well-contained) alcohol influence.. hoppy as well with a significant floral presence. The flavor was on the strong and bitter side with aged, sweeter caramel and toffee notes backing.. floral bitterness gave way to booze-inspired heat on the edges and through the finish.. lots of residual sugars at the end. Heavier-bodied with moderate carbonation and lots of warmth on the palate.. long bitter impression on the finish.. kinda reminded me of a fresh Old Stock.

Tap @ the 5. Very hazy orange-brown color with a small creamy off-white head. Malty aroma is sweet and fruity. Apricots and caramel. Fruity malt flavor. More apricots and caramel. Some hops show in the middle. Long light bitter finish. Acidic and mildly tart on the finish. Semi-dry and warming but can’t pick out 12% at all. Medium to full body.

Aged 10 months, sampled at the brewery. Lots of lace, a siipper, and very drinkable. Drinkable. Reminded me of Doggie Claws without the lovely orange taste. Glen the brewmaster said he is onto wood chips for the next batch, if not even the existing one. Rich and can be a solid one with more complexity.

Atlanta BW tasting at 5 Seasons. Pours a ruby red amber with a thin lasting head. aroma is sweet- tons of brown sugar, toffee, caramel malts, fruity esters - raisin apple, pear, and figs doughy with some bread yeast and thick molasses. Flavor is a bit spicy and phenolic up front when it is cool, but as it warms the sweetness and fruits come out a bit- caramel, toasted malts, toffee, honey, and dark bitter fruitiness in the end- as it warms you get some alcohol kick but still stays big and smooth. Pretty good overall.

Clear but very dark red with small white head. Smells like a chewy beer with apple skins and mealy apple aromas. A sweet smelling brew. Really thick, heavy high gravity body but surprisingly not so chewy. Same sweet, juicy yeast character as the other beers in the 5S lineup but in a beefier beer. Sweeter than it is hoppy.
