Commercial Description:
An American Pale Ale - but brewed exclusively with British barley. It is copper in color and has a nice sweetness from the malted barley. A citrusy aroma comes from the American whole leaf hops added in bags sitting right inside the serving tank (called ‘dry hopping’). Oh, where does the name come from? It was Junior Samples’ phone number from the ol’ Hee Haw show. (Junior used to live in these parts actually.) And I really, really like Hee Haw.

Appearance: Hazy, dark copper body with a small, ivory-colored head. Smell: Malts smelling lightly of cracked English toffee and dry biscuits enveloped by a grassy hop character. Taste: English-minded maltiness with a hint of toffee and less than a hint of sweetness. Takes on a more biscuity quality upon warming. Grassy, earthy hops with a medium bitterness. Finishes decidedly bitter. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-low carbonation. Drinkability: I’ve had different renditions of the BR-549 Pale Ale, and, for me, I must admit I preferred the more maltier, somewhat sweeter versions we saw early on. 5 Seasons Westside 9/22: Why, it’s been a coon’s age since I’ve last had this one! Appearance: Lightly hazed, dark amber body with a thinnish, sudsy, white head. Smell: With a whiff, a scent of spicy, grassy hops with a lesser degree of muted citrus hits the nose followed by malty tones of toasted biscuits and dry caramel. Taste: Ah, Maris Otter, the specialty malt the really makes a pale ale sizzle with its bumped up bready, biscuity richness. Lightly sweet hints of caramel. Hops are earthy, faintly citrusy, but display a nice herbaceous grassiness. Medium-light bitterness. The beer dries out substantially on the back half, in plenty of time for the lightly bitter finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Fairly soft mouthfeel. Drinkability: A beer with good levels of maltiness and hoppiness and overall drinkability - just as a good pale ale should be.

On tap at the brewpub with CaptainCougar, TBC, and kp
Pours hazy dark copper orange. Stiff white head.
Earthy woody hop aroma. Some dry biscuit malts aromas
Lots of earthy hops. Some citrus and herbs as well. Again with the biscuit.
Kind of a typical body and mouthfeel. Light body and refreshing.
Yeppers, its a pale ale.

on tap-pours a thin off white head and cloudy orange color. Aroma is musty malt, earthy hops. Taste is musty medium malt, secondary earthy/metallic (English) hops, pungent (non-English) hops and woody. Descriptions says barley is British, hops are American!? Later I did pick up the citrus hops but for the first 3/4 , none.

On tap at the grand opening 1/19/07: Pours a transparent copper orange with a thin ring of off-white head. Aroma of lightly sweet, toasty pale malt with a touch of citrusy grapefruity hops. Body starts with nice mild malty sweetness and good fresh piny citrusy hoppy balance. A nice APA.

Draft @ the brewpub. Frothy head. Nice hop aroma and flavor. More of an IPA than a PA IMHO. A very nice, drinkable beer.
