Abbaye d’Aulne Brune des Pères sur lie, 6.0% ABV
Dark amber color; giant creamy head. Very nice malty aroma, with notes of liquorice, vanilla, lemon, roasted malt. Really balanced, with good malt, roasted malt, light liquorice, caramel, good hops. Long final. Excellent!
Much more complex and full bodied than the low alcohol content may suggest.

Note: I am 80% sure I am rating the correct beer. My bottle simply says "Brown Ale" in English and 7 degrees (which is different from what is pictured). I think that it was produced in 1999, so maybe its just an old label. Rich brown/tan color. Thick tan head which eventually settles to lace the glass with a solid ring. Strong caramel and slightly sour aroma. Very rich in flavor. Toffee and sweetness dominate the flavor to start moving to a slightly tangy bitterness and finishing mildly to moderately bitter with a component of roastedness. Despite the greater than average upfront sweetness, this beer finishes cleanly for the most part. I was pleastantly surprised by the quality of this beer. For the price, a nice alternative to the more expensive Abbey varieties.

Bottle: Poured a deep brown almost burgundy color ale with a medium foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of candi sugar and fruity yeast ester is quite interesting. Taste is a mix between some candi sugar, substantial Belgian malt backbone and fruity yeast ester. Body is a bit thin with some good carbonation. Nothing earth shattering but well done for the style.

Dark red brown color, nice medium beige head. Sweet, malty, chocolate, caramel and medium licorice in aroma. Flavor has also strong chocolate with some licorice tones and crispy mouthfeel. Medium bodied. Slightly one dimensional brew, still nice product.

Vinous nose with a bit of wood, vanilla & toffee. Fizzy, chestnut brown with lotsa yeast crusties. Decent label, with a minor ding for the goofy monk, good bottle. Smooth and balanced drinking -- a nice brown with some caramel. Quick finishing, woody palate. This isn’t going to win any awards, but it’s a very solid and quaffable brew.

Pours a transparent dark copper with a nicely-lacing dark tan head. Aroma of sweet toasty doughy dark caramel malts and some Belgian yeast. Body starts with nice malty sweetness and a slightly drier finish. A pretty good abbey dubbel.
