Commercial Description:
Blanche des Honnelles (1991) was originally very localised, and has since expanded beyond the boundries of the greater and lesser Honnelle rivers, from which it takes it's name. The Blanche des Honnelles leaves the beaten path somewhat. It has an amber colour which is after all the traditional appearance of the Blanches. It is also stronger (6%) than the Blanches that we know. Its taste is surprising and is not comparable to the brews with the same name that are now on the market. If the bouquet is subdued its first flavour is a stark dry sharpness against a pepper background. There is no acidity in this Blanche that is made with three cereals (barley, wheat, oats). It has a stimulating taste, leaving a subdued but refreshing final impression. Lots of character and curious.

A juicy wit from one of the world’s great brewers. It cheers me that I have another six or seven beers from these guys to track down, because they never disappoint. One endearing characteristic of the brewer is that the beer is always bloody keen to escape. Fortunately I was near a sink when I prised the cap off, with a glass ready for the volcanic stream down the side of the bottle. The beer was muddy orange in colour and as heavy with sediment as the river on the label. Short but enduring head. Lovely tangy citric aroma - tangerines, Cremola foam, coriander and tobacco leaf (?) Very fresh-smelling and inviting, with that lovely house yeast adding something unique. Satisfyingly creamy mouthfeel. The flavour mix is generally tart and mouth-watering, yet the finish is dry. There are notes of Juicy Fruit chewing gum, lemon rind and coriander. This is very easy drinking and refreshing with it. Perfect summer drinking. (33cl bottle from Cloudwine Cellars, Melbourne. Best before 2008)

33cl bottle from Noel Cuveliers, Abele. So a double wit then. Stronger than the average blanche. Cloudy orange/gold with thick pale beige head. Rather an attractive wit, lemony, some spice, some cereal. Good in mouth, soft, but with depth. Finish has tangy lemon. Some more spice. In fact spicey lemon finsh is excellent. Very drinkable, well structured wit.

A strange Blanche indeed. A lot of spicy notes, coriander and orange of course, but certainly more complex than "normal" blanche. Dry in spite of oats and slightly bitter. A good beer.

750mL bottle, drink before 2009. Very hazy and somewhere between yellow and orange. Almost looks like Airborne. Nice tart and citrusy aroma with a decent amount of spice (especially corriander). I’ll admit, it took a bit for this to grow on me. It starts rather wheaty and heavy on the citrus. Spices, honey and those oats all mix together to make a great, full mouthfeel. Very dry, tart and peppery finish. Very good wit.

Brought back from BC by TimE and thanks. A meaty wit with some balls to it and a good beer. Page 268 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide and only 199 out of his 500 Classic Brews to go.

Murky haze with creamy white suds and swimming with bits. Heavily coriandered, peppery snout with a touch of honey. Silkily oaty with a potent dose of Tripel Karmeliet-style spice, and finishing with an appealing dryness atypical of the style.
