Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

This dark reddish liquid poors a modest head. Smell is light sour and fruity. The first tastes that come up are caramel, coffee and some other burnt scents together with a tiny bit of berries. Fresh bitters are not very present but just enough. After-taste is mild and a bit one dimensional. A very good beer but the overall palate has room for more complexity.

Aroma of yeast, prunes and toffee. Appearance is red with white head. Flavor is sweet with prunes and raisins. A goof but not very complex beer.

A nose of pears, amaretto and sugars. Taste is of pears, banana, almonds, marzipan and quite a bit of alcohol. A strange brew. Not complex and very unbalanced. A bad bottle? I will rerate if I get the chance.

.33l bottle. Deep ruddy brown with quickly dying large bubbly off-white head. Nose is very sweet and malty. Incredibly explosive, full flavor of sweet malt, dark fruit, prune, molasses, smoke, leather. Very earthy, but with a great effervescence. Reminds of some ’old style’ ales i’ve had in the States, but with a stronger, sweeter body. Terrific!

330 mL bottle from St. Veronus. Can’t believe I’ve never tried this one before. Deep, dark ruby brown with a small beige head. Malty aroma with some dark fruit and spice. Lots of anise in the flavour, with some malt, dried fruit and a little smoke. One of the heavier beers I’ve tried, perhaps due to the relatively light carbonation. All-in-all, a very tasty brew.

Color dark amber with beautiful head. In the complexity of warm aromas, the chocolate prevails. The good balanced, the body structured with points of caramel and spice. Good beer.

watery gusher. hmm. at least spew forth with gusto! Oh well. Dark chestnut brown, lighter in body than I expected. Small head. Some cola nut and Brazil nut aroma. Blissfully smooth, airy, whipped and gentle. Surprising. Sweet, brown sugar, notes of pecan and leather. Very good beer, little tingly in the deep finish.

Fat malts with heaps of demerara about them. Light burnt flavours and sweet toffee give way to quite a drying bitterness. Very long in the finish with the burnt woodiness coming to the fore. Quite easy drinking but with a great depth and intensity about it.
