Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Bottle from Kris or Nelson Wines, it’s been too long to remember now. Pours reddish amber with a lasting off white head and lots of sediment. Nose is sweet malts with dried fruit, caramel and candi sugar. Taste is much the same, obvious Belgian yeast notes, a little cakey with some subtle warmth. Hadn’t had a Belgian brune for a while and it definitely hit the spot, it’s kinda given me the thirst for them again.

Bottle: Ruddy brown, smaller creamy beige head, lots of UFO’s detectable; solid sweet caramelly nose with a distinctive touch of coriander and with some vinous illusions; moderate to solid sweet flavour, medium bodied; warming alcohol in the sweet-caramelly finish. Pretty overrated sweety............

Bit of a gusher. 33cl bottle, gift from donfardz64. Slightly funky, yeasty aroma. Quite a floral nose, mostly rose. Sweet, biscuity malt aromas, vanilla and a candy-like sweetness. Flavours aren’t as sweet as the aromas. There’s a bit of a zesty, almost citrus tang to begin with. This then turns a bit bitter near the end. Plum and banana fruits on a strong, grainy malt base.

Bottle. Ruby-brown body with some dregs that probably is’nt suppose to be there. Big very shortlived head. Aroma is prunes, sugar candy and some caramel. Flavor is very sweet and malty with notes of burnt sugar and caramel. It unfortunately seems a bit flat, but is a nice brew anyway. Hopefully the next one will be better, with a higher carbonation and without dregs.

Bottle. Protein and yeast really shaken out, ruby-copper body is ((illegible)), luscious creamy lasting beige head. Sweet malty alcohol nose, some mineral water, caramel and earth with seemingly subtle candi sugar (though I later discover this is a product of pure malt). Taste is a sweet caramel base, a tad too much alcohol showing, muddled fruit and faint figs, but a unified presentation. Has some light port wine character and amusement park flair. Full but not obese body, hops are totally faded, smooth and enjoyable all the way through. Very classy, though I’d’ve loved (and will undoubtedly love in the future) a fresher example. This brewery can do no wrong by me.

Dégusté avec french tickler le 16 avril 2007. Cloudy dark amber poor with lots of sediments and a THICK light brown foamy head. Aromas of burbon vanilla, french toast, brown sugar, alcohol, caramel, cinnamon and apple/pear. Very evolutive aromas. Aromas also remind me of a typical rochefort yeast. Very Creamy, thick body, extremely well balanced. Perfect bitterness, nothing extreme... Perfect effervescence! Very complexe flavors added a hint of candy sugar and prunes. 1 -> Creamy 2 -> Oily 3-> Dry bitter finish. Exceptional beer!

33cl bottle from ølbutikken. Best before date was not readable. pours coudy caramelly brown, offwhite head. aroma is slightly sour/citrussy(lime), cellary, soap, fruits. flavor was sour, fruity, berries, slight cellary. quite well balanced. sawdust??, caramel, alc well hidden. overall too sour and fruity for my taste, but i could sense a beer well crafted.
