Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

This is just too good. Everything about it is fantastic. This is one beer where the description is right on. Don’t miss this one.

Brown pour with thick cream colored head. Aroma of yeast, fruit, candied sugar. Medium body, fizzy on the palate, huge dark fruit/candied sugar flavor. Finish is slightly syrupy.

Bottle. Pours a hazy brown with sediment. The aroma is apple, malt, and some caramel & dark fruit. The flavor is a bit stronger than I would have preferred. At first, you can taste the fruit (apple, dark fruits) in the mouth - but it ends with alcohol and malt.

Somewhat of a gusher. Shimmering red-amber with a small white head. Similar to the grand cru in flavor and aroma, but whereas the gc gets bogged down in yeast and pepper, brune soars above on wings of fruit, both dark sweet and lighter citrus. More malt than gc also helps balance the aggressively spicy abbaye profile. Palate similarly avoids the fizzy overkill of gc; it’s a perfectly smooth example of full bodied carbonation. High quality stuff here.

Appearance: hazelnut color. Medium head, yellow, dense and lasting. Aroma: dark malts, intensive smells hints of candy, honey, toffee, "manjar", butterscotch and vanilla. Very light spicy reminiscences of ginger and nutmeg. Fruity aromas like fig, plums, berries and raisins. Yeasty and cookies touch. Flavor: sweet malty start, like in the nose, the toffee, butter, raisins, berries, plums, honey and vanilla. Also, the toast hazelnuts; spiciness like ginger, nutmeg and aniseed. Truffle reminiscences and liquoriness similar to "cherry liquor" and raisins in rum. Warming final. Palate: medium to full body, oily texture and medium carbonation. Remark: aromatic and flavor complexity, sweet but balanced, good body and not excessive yeasty.

Pours amber into a trappist glass. Off-white head recedes to nothing. Spicey pit fruit aromas. Sweet from front to back with pit fruit and a dry, lasting finish.

Brought back a 33cl bottle from Brussels last summer of ’07. Deep dark clouded orange. Light head. Fruity burnt bread fruitcake aroma - Rochefort like. Flavor - orange marmalade(?) hard candy. Bitter - orange liqueur, traces of burnt wood. Yeasty. Sugar? Spiced - coriander? licorice? Difficult to describe (which is what I like). Warming. Velvety texture. Floaties up the wazoo now; starting to get dirty. Unbelievably good. Fantastic charred bitter aftertaste. Competes with the best Trappist offerings. And did I mention it was 2.15 euros? A freakin tragedy that this isn’t available in Ohio anymore.

EDIT (9-26-08): It IS available in Ohio now! Hallelujah!
