Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Aroma of caramel apples. Color is orange brown with very low carbonation and almost no head. Taste is rich, sweet and sour. Starting on light/medium body it goes down with a thin feel. Finish comes in with a sour apple cider taste, then an odd tartness. After taste is flat and stale. The bottle states that its best before 2010, but I think this went bad. This is nothing like the beer everyone else has rated here. I will try it again some time to is if I can get a better bottle.

Bottle. I seem to like this less each time i have it. Pours a dark body with a thin tan head. Aroma is dark fruit plum, raisin , grape, liquor, and a sweet malt. The flavor is rich with dark fruit flavors that give way to a sour bitter funk. I’m wondering if this picked up an infection.

Bottle shared with and courtesy of heavy (a huge thanks!)
Poured an opaque red-brown colour. Small white head that went away fast. Nothing too impressive but nice. And then the aroma hit me. The nose is lovely and a bit spicy, reminiscent of Jacobite... orange, caramel, some chocolate.... Flowery. Nice. The taste is sweet and not all that different from that (not that I mind, on the contrary). Very sweet. Spice, candy, orange, honey, coriander? Weak coffeish aftertaste. Even if it gets a bit dull later on, the taste is definitely lovely, complex and this is definitely a great beer.

26/05 0.33 l bottle from belgianshop.com. Poured really nice murky brown copper body with medium smaller head. Very nice aroma of caramel, chocolate, candy, raisin, also some grassy hops scented, but other components are so strong this simply fades. Flavor not any worser, sweet caramel and chocolate still dominating, while citrus and orange balance it so it is not overly sweet. Pretty complex, other spices here as well. Alcohol is not felt at all. Long and pleasant sweet caramel finish is result of its full creamy body. WOW, awesome beer indeed!

Bottle thanks to HogTownHarry. This is now on my list of favourites. Brown pour with a large volume of head that laced very nicely. Aroma was strong in alcohol along with brown sugar and yeast. Flavour was just a burst of wonderful flavour. Brown sugar, dates, a light touch of plums, coriander and cloves. This was just a darn beautiful beverage.

Ahhhhh. It tastes as good as it looks and is as satisfying as it smells. Nice sweet, dried fruit nose, accompianed with nice ruby brown (if possible) colour. Definitely taste apricots, and nice subtle hops. Also included are nice chunky vitamins, good for anyone’s soul. Just what I needed after a super long day.

Bottle. Aroma of sweet fruits and spices, darker fruits and toffee appear upon some warming. Flavor progresses in the same way, from sweetness to earthier notes like the toffee. Mouthfeel a nice balance of sweet and dry, also neither too heavy nor too weak. I felt roughly the same way about the Grand Cru: Really solid stuff, but no one particular characteristic that wowed me.
