Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Bottle thanks to HogTownHarry. This is now on my list of favourites. Brown pour with a large volume of head that laced very nicely. Aroma was strong in alcohol along with brown sugar and yeast. Flavour was just a burst of wonderful flavour. Brown sugar, dates, a light touch of plums, coriander and cloves. This was just a darn beautiful beverage.

Ahhhhh. It tastes as good as it looks and is as satisfying as it smells. Nice sweet, dried fruit nose, accompianed with nice ruby brown (if possible) colour. Definitely taste apricots, and nice subtle hops. Also included are nice chunky vitamins, good for anyone’s soul. Just what I needed after a super long day.

Bottle. Aroma of sweet fruits and spices, darker fruits and toffee appear upon some warming. Flavor progresses in the same way, from sweetness to earthier notes like the toffee. Mouthfeel a nice balance of sweet and dry, also neither too heavy nor too weak. I felt roughly the same way about the Grand Cru: Really solid stuff, but no one particular characteristic that wowed me.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy brown with a small white head (surprisingly without the floaties present in Grand Cru). Aroma of light fruits. Flavor of spices, Belgian yeast, anise star, and molasses. Sweet with a slightly heavy mouthfeel. An enjoyable Belgian strong ale.

750ml bottle, reads "Brasserie des Rocs... Brune". Pours a large creamy light tan head. Cloudy, thick amber color. smells like a strong, hoppy brown ale. Body is light but full. A nice mix of fruit, spices, malt, and gentle hops. Slightly sour. Leaves an interesting aftertaste. Unless it’s because I just ate some dark chocolate. Alot like brushing your teeth before your morning orange juice, I guess. Easy to drink, yet very respectable and enjoyable. Now that the chocolate flavor has worn itself off my tongue, this tastes superb! You can really taste quality here.

Bottle @ Hoopers, London. Colour is reddish brown with beige head. Aroma is fruity, breadlike, raisins and plums. Taste is again fruity, with a honey sweetness and citrus flavours. Caramel and malty. Very good beer.

750 ml. bottle. It’s another gusher, but a slow one. Rich aromas of bread and darker fruits. Like raisins and plums. Color is ruby brune and the beige/tan head was very respectible. The gusher raised small chunks. Near full bodied with coarsely creamy carbonation. Smooth. Flavor is hint of citrus which is covered by lighter fruit flavors like berry, red plum, touch of oak wood. There’s a decent amount of bitter to match the fruit sweetness. It’s more subtle and complex than I can readily describe. Incredibly good ale.
