Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Dark amber/lt brown, light tan head. Sweetish aroma with lots of carmel malt. Malty sweet flavor that is very smooth. no hop character to speak of. Med body, Great Stuff

Hazy amber copper red color with a decent whitish head. Smell is sweet fruit, fruity, sticky, caramel, and malty. Taste is much the same as the smell. Fruity and easy to drink. Pretty good.

Wow... when I took the bottle cap off I could smell the sourness thru the cork... it was completely soaked. Still opened with a large pop when I got it out though so be careful. Pours a dark orangish red with a very fine smooth head. Sour aroma that is backed by fine belgian candied malt, lovely combo. Sour wet wood and ripe red berry flavor. Very rich and quite subtle... somewhat vacant from the body. Very smooth velvety carbonation and body, however a little too airy for the flavors. Lots of fruity fermented red berries is the best way I can describe this beer. Yum yum.

Big bottle shared w/ Simon. Pours nearly flat. Aroma is predominantly sweet fruits/malt with a heavy belgian yeastiness throughout. Smells very dubbel-esque. Flavor is a bit unexpected... a slight sour twang hides behind upfront sweet malts, ripe fruits (subtle plum, pear), raisin, hints of oak. Flavors and palate are extremely mellow, easy-drinking. Flavors seem to have blended together wonderfully. A really nice beer all-around.

Bottle at Brouwer’s, 4/20. This one didn’t live up to the reputation for me. Tasted like a weaker version of the Duchesse de Bourgogne Sour Red, with a bit of shallow Caracole Nostradamus thrown in. Its predominant drawback is its lack of depth - there is little flavor on the back end, and incredibly little complexity to this beer. Pours nicely - a great dark ruby color, though the head was reminiscent of soap bubbles. Weak aroma of malts and fruits, and a flavor of plums, sour cherries and sweet malts. I’m now incredibly curious to try blending the aforementioned beers to see if I can create a better version of this one. Really not a bad beer, but it gets knocked for not living up to its rep.

This one is fantastic. Clear brown look with a dense brown head. Aroma is lovely vinouse, sugery and has notes of plum in medaire. The flavor is a winner, extremly soft and desert like flavor, sweet and alchoholic, with a complex sugery sweetness and tons of fruity esters. Warming alchohol finish.

Bottle. It’s a shame that a 3.7 could be considered a disappointment but this beer was for me. I have honestly been looking for this beer since I joined the site and I have found the Grand Cru to be a bteer example of the style. My bottle was totally flat. Not sure if I got a bad one or not. Poured a deep amber red body with thin head. Aroma is dried fruit, plum. Flavor is sweet sugar plums, dried fruit and raisins. Totally flat. Sticky mouthfeel. Decent taste and overall a decent experience.

Bottle. Body is a deep brown with reddish highlights and a finger or so of dense, tan head. Rich aromas of brown sugar, prunes and vinous presence. Mouthfeel is silky, thick and sticky. Flavors of sweet malt (caramel, brown sugar and candi sugar) intertwine with fruits like plum, prune, figs, raisins and wine grapes. A slight bit of tartness balances out the sweet, stickiness and makes me want a second.
