Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Pours a hazy, bubbly, chunky, burnt orange with a thick, well retained light tan head. Wonderful aromas of plum, apple, other citrus, some malts, and a touch of some caramel. Taste is quite full flavored. Pretty sweet, a lot of caramel and plum in the taste. Really smooth, and quite easy drinking, even though it is chunky as hell, but thats to be expected as all Des Rocs beers Ive had have been like this. Great mouthfeel, kind of danced on the tastebuds. Great brew from a great abbey. Thumbs up.

750ml bottle, with no best by date. This one was a bit of a gusher. Thankfully I opened it near the sink, and only lost a few ounces. Pours a dark caramel brown with a frothy two finger head, with only an eight ounce pour. The foam takes forever to fall to a thick cap, leaving behind a thick sheeting of lace. Smell; chalky yeast up front, and then becomes fruity with figs, dates and plums. Brown sugar, caramel and bread dough give this a very nice malty aroma. Taste; there’s lots of dark fruits in here with the figs, dates and plums, but there’s something else in there I can’t quite place. Some cloves and spices fill out the middle, and then tone of sweet caramel and brown sugar malts come out. The finish is a bit chalky from the yeast, and the alcohol has a definite presence as well. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a nice smooth natural carbonation. The drinkability is really good, and the only real complaint I have is that it is a touch sweeter than I would have liked. Overall this is a reall damn good beer.

Fiery red pour thick with sediment. Zinfandel aroma fills the air with the pop of the cap. Dense, rich dark fruits, cranberry orange scone follow. Lollipop sweetness. More red wine in the flavor. Rich toffee malts and a bright clementine sunshine in the finish. Lacking the tannic dryness I was hoping for here, with a slightly watery, flattened mouthfeeling in general. It has the density of port but fails to contextualize this - small complaints, really. A fine aperterif.

Bottle at Delirium Cafe, Brussels. Pours an attractive hazy brown with a smallish, dense white head. Aroma tickles the nostrils with dark pit fruits, berries, cherries, and a candied sweetness. Wow. The first scent of this is absolutely divine and comes from nowhere - really amazing; vibrant and complex to no end. Taste is really interesting but not as good, say, as the aroma. Strong alcohol and warming presence throughout. Interesting sweet-sour duo, with fruity ester sweetness and a lingering spice. Quite sweet in the finish, with a lingering, rasping slightly bitter after. Nice, creamy palate. Excellent, falls a bit short with a muddled, alcoholic taste.

Bottled 75cl at Delirium Cafe, Brussels. Pours redish brown with a tall beige head. Aroma is complex, sweet and fruity. Notes of caramel and chocolate. Taste is also complex. Sweet, fruity, caramel. A bit of hops to balance everything. Warming alcohol in the end.

750 Bottle. Tulip glass. I tried to uncap the bottle in a very slow and gentle manner. However, the foam still erupted. I had to stop and wait but became impatient and decided to just pour it. That being said it poured a dark brown with a red tinge, tons of sediment floating all around, and a head that was still moderately thick. Aroma is dominated by fruit and malt. Flavor is of raisin, plum, prune, caramel and sugar. Sweet and malty. The sediment makes for an interesting palate. Mild finish. Alcohol is well hidden.

Cloudy dark amber poor with lots of sediments and a THICK light brown foamy head. Aromas of burbon vanilla, french toast, brown sugar, alcohol, caramel, cinnamon and apple/pear. Very evolutive aromas. Aromas also remind me of a typical rochefort yeast. Very Creamy, thick body, extremely well balanced. Perfect bitterness, nothing extreme... Perfect effervescence! Very complexe flavors added a hint of candy sugar and prunes. 1 -> Creamy 2 -> Oily 3-> Dry bitter finish. Exceptional beer!
