Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

750 Bottle. Tulip glass. I tried to uncap the bottle in a very slow and gentle manner. However, the foam still erupted. I had to stop and wait but became impatient and decided to just pour it. That being said it poured a dark brown with a red tinge, tons of sediment floating all around, and a head that was still moderately thick. Aroma is dominated by fruit and malt. Flavor is of raisin, plum, prune, caramel and sugar. Sweet and malty. The sediment makes for an interesting palate. Mild finish. Alcohol is well hidden.

Cloudy dark amber poor with lots of sediments and a THICK light brown foamy head. Aromas of burbon vanilla, french toast, brown sugar, alcohol, caramel, cinnamon and apple/pear. Very evolutive aromas. Aromas also remind me of a typical rochefort yeast. Very Creamy, thick body, extremely well balanced. Perfect bitterness, nothing extreme... Perfect effervescence! Very complexe flavors added a hint of candy sugar and prunes. 1 -> Creamy 2 -> Oily 3-> Dry bitter finish. Exceptional beer!

750ml - Light, light brown head of substantial size, toffee colored liquid, very small and fine bubbles. Candy sweet astringency fading to a woody finish. I liked it more as time passed. OK.

Poured a light brown color with a thinnish white head. Big hunks of matter are plentiful in the beer, which these brews are well known for. When swirled, it looks like a snow globe in a world of beer - dare to dream. Aroma of Belgian malts, light plum and wood, graham cracker. Exceptionally light and smooth palate. The taste has a vinous dry sweetness to it, and the finish is slightly oaky and a bit sour, which lingers and leaves the suggestion of taking another sip. It’s subtle but not simple, and dangerously drinkable for a 9%.

(Bottle @ Delerium cafe, Brussels, Belgium): Pours a lightish brown-red color, good head, diminishing, good lacing, off-white. Grapejuice aroma, sweet, some hops. Not like a belgian I had before. Sweet taste, not as floral, a little skunky to start, good moutheel. Interesting, maybe aged?

(Rating #952)

Bottle gift from stegosaurus. Red/brown pour with huge head. Nose of fruit and alcohol. Taste was fruit with a hint of brown sugar and spice. Not a bad brew but very very odd tasting. I enjoyed this very much.
