Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Bottle, head starts seeping out before I even pour it, despite safe storage. Lots of floaties. I questioned that this bottle might be infected due to the enormous head, but all the elements of the aroma seemed to be OK. Anyway, some fruitiness, and sweet malts, wine like notes, and a bit of sharp tartiness. The flavor is very carbonated, with a bit of fruit, yeast, a touch of caramel and spice. The carbonation level is really out of hand, and it’s hard to enjoy all the flavors while it keeps prickling at my tongue.

Bottle. Nice tan head with good duration. Color is dark amber with lots of sediments. Aroma is quite powerful with lots of spices and fruits. Taste is nice and complex with spices and fruits as well.

750ml, not a gusher or full of sediment. pours muddy brown with hints of red with small tan head. nose is very red winey, dates, bread, and yeast. flavor is also pretty bland, some plums, grapes, and caramel. carbination is a tad prickly. alcohol is very well hidden. abbaye des rocs beers are just boring, overrated, and inconsistent..3.5.

11/20/07, 750ml 2005 bottle. i couldn’t say this improved much with age but it didn’t get worse. this is a really subtle, winey BSA. the palate is short. it is really nothing special and highly over rated but the wine quality is nice. too bad most of the bottles pour huge chunks of sediment. that really hurts the score and you can feel them going down.3.4.

A fine example of what we can buy in the States. Rich. Dark. Malty. Strong body. Good beer.

quite a robust beer. the flavors of Belgian are part of this concoction. Aroma is hints of orange marmalade, many rich malts of mild cocoa, heavy fruit and light hop presence.

The aroma has caramel, toasted malt, spices (orange ginger), and yeast. The appearance is deep amber with a two finger head. There are lots of floating particles. Yuck. The flavor is complex and like the aroma. The palate is sticky but thin. The aftertaste is bitter and toasty. I am not a huge fan.

Bottle cork & wire: Pours a hazy, deep amber with deep orange hues in the light. Tan head is initially enormous and falls to a consistant film which leaves a thick lacing. The aroma is pungent. Tons of Belgian malt layers and fruits. Syrup soaked prunes, green raisins, toffee, and figs. The flavor is sweet dark fruits. Enormous complexity of figs, maple soaked prunes, butterscotch sweetness, dark citrus notes to give a balancing subtle edge. It developes more with each sip, and became more enjoyable as it approached room temperature. Plummy notes and berry-like characteristics became more apparent with warming. There’s a light dryness in the smooth, slightly roasty toffeeish finish. An outstanding Belgian Strong Ale.

Bottle. Dark amber-brown beer with a nice cream colored head. Huge fruity aroma with some sweetness - berry, plum, date. Deep malty flavor with chocolate, caramel, and nuts and some fruitiness. Flavor lingers with some earthiness and yeastiness and oak. Very smooth, creamy mouthfeel that is surprisingly a bit lighter. Hides alcohol very well and is very drinkable.
