Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

BB 2008. Pours an opaque, deep garnet-brown with floaties; head is moderately full, off-white, fizzy, but creamy, with decent lasting ability and some nice lace. Aroma is sweet and fruity; brown sugar, nutty toffee, raisin, plum, a berry-like character that is unusual, and some burnt wood and spicy whisps of alcohol. Flavor is of the same, brown sugar, plum, raisin, light berry notes, and burnt oak, with vanilla, as if from an oak-aged barrel. Palate is soft to lively, nearly chewy and a bit syrupy with a medium-full body and a mild alcohol warmth. Overall, it’s a bit too sweet and lacking the exceptional depth of the great Belgians. Nice and enjoyable and worth the try, but nothing in comparison to the Grand Cru. After another try, I did like it better but still lacks the multiple layers of flavors and the numerous amounts of floaties detracts from the appearance and the palate. The beer remains still a bit too sweet with the only note keeping it from being cloying, the burnt oak note which is not the most pleasant note. Nice and quite unique but not one of my favorites of the style.

Sedimenty body, ruby colour, creamy white head. Aroma is quite sweet, but no hint of candi sugar. Mouthfeel is quite nice, alcohol is a little too evident, and the flavour is quite strong and hoppy. I could wish for more malt to balance the hops and perhaps less alcohol.

Clear ruby amber body with a medium creamy off-white head. Very sweet hoppy aroma. Sweet malty flavor with some fruity hints and a touch of hops.

Pours dark reddish-brown with a rich head. Lage chunks of sediment in suspension. A very complex aroma of sweet malts and floral nectar. This brew has a mulitilayered flavour of malts and dried sweet fruit - strongly resembles floral notes of the fynbos nectar honey (fynbos is a small coastal brush growing in the vicinity of Cape Town ,South Africa). Awesome! Alcohol well tucked away. Silky mouthfeel and long flavourful finish with light bitterness that begs for more. Fantastic beer!!

750mL bottle. Pours a beautiful amber color, clear; off-white head with strong lacing. Plenty of dried fruits and vinuous notes in the aroma, raisins and belgian sugar. Medium-to-full, slightly chewy mouthfeel: lots of belgian sugar, hints of cotton candy, dried apricots, some citrus notes. Tasty, but nothing to write home about; I prefer their Grand Cru. Medium finish, raisiny and vaguely bitter, almost plasticy. Like Italian wines (and a lot of the Ommegang beers), I feel like this is better to pair with a meal than to drink on its own.

Lots of stuff going on with this brew. Hints of caramel, raisins, and plums. Pour a nice deep brown with a frothy head to it.

On tap at Papago Brewing. Red/copper colored with no head by the time it got to our table. Aroma consisted of sweet malts, dark fruits, brown sugar, and a little yeastiness. Taste was extremely well balanced, very malty and fruity, even vaguely tart, without going overboard in any way. Amazingly smooth mouthfeel with just the right amount of carbonation. Also great with cheese and chocolate! Awesome.

perfect mouthfeel, nicely hopped, with citrus, honey, yeast and malt. Incredibly ballanced, though I was expecting a little more structure and complexity.
