Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

BIg Bottle - too much for a light weight in an hour’s time on a week night - light’s out. That being said, a delicious beer. Light brown with red highlights. Beautiful light brown head that sticks around. Very distinctive flavor - sweet fruits, nutty, a hint of spiciness - a terrific balance. Great feel in the mouth- smouth down the pipe. A hearty beer - full body. Great beer with a meal. My full rec.

My best so far! Aroma is tops, a hint of nuttiness with a nice hoppy/sweet paradox. The head was large (good) but died a bit quickly. Flavor, mmm,mmm best ever for such a strong brew. Anonther sip and I’m changing the 8 to a 9. That good nutty darkness with a sweet fruity hint. Wonderful on the palate as all good browns. Send me something better, but I have a hard time thinking there is anything better in a bottle.

(Bottle at Monks Café, Stockholm) Pours hazy brown/red with big yeast flakes and a white head. Fruits, berries, allmond paste, yeast, wet tobacco, herbs and white pepper aroma with notes of ripe bananas. Some brown sugar. Spicey, a bit fiery flavour with lots of carbonation and some herbs. Small acid touch. Salty aftertaste with a small alcohol-ish afterbitterness. Prettty thick mouthfell.

Bottle from a small trade with Jamie at Sam’s in Durham, NC. Beautiful dark amber pour with a slight-off-white head. Lots of carbonation. Aroma smelled like a milder version of their grand cru, lots of fruits--citrus espically, heavy sugary malts, vanilla, cinnamon, yeast, faint hops, spices. Very smooth and tasty. So many floaties and sinkies, fuck filtration. Tasty. Nice one to ring in #200 with.

Aroma was full of citrus, sweet and fruity. Dark reddish orange color with plenty of sediment floating in the beer. Sweet flavor, full of malt and carmel like flavors. Creamy in the mouth. Very good overall.
