Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Bottle. Aroma is on the small side, but flavor is of the scale, almost over the top. I need to have this one again.

Bottle 33 cl. Medium brown ambaries color. Medium head. Aroma is powerful, notes of port vine caramel / burned caramel. Hind of cherry. Some notes of malt, vanilla and hop, yeast. Flavor there are some sweet and bitter notes. Finish is smooth and very pleasing. A great beer that can compete with the best that Trappist’s has to offer I thought.

75cl bottle shared with mate: lovely aroma of plum and raisin with lots of malt and some spice. pours a brownish read type color with a bubbly head that dissipates a few sips in. Complex flavors of malt, some plum, raisin, spice, and just nice sweet mixture of alcohol and malt. Sweetens as it warms. Nice mouth feel that is full and not over active. Excellent brew!

Deep brown amber with thick offwhite head. Cinnamon, caramel and vegetables. Quit sour actually but still a complex and balanced beer.

Bottle at home - shared with Mette. Unclear brown - offwhite head. A lot of fruits/berries, yeast, sweet, caramel, raisins, tobacco, chokolate, and a lot more....

Bottled. Sampled at Monks Café, Stockholm. Red-brown colour, with a beautiful fluffy foam. Sweet aroma, reminiscent of a flowery meadow. Maltsweet, with notes of banana, herbs and spices, with berry-ish tones and almond paste. No bitterness. Red apples. Big, complex flavour. Very enjoyableand perfect to sip slowly. The high ABV is hardly noticable. A good autumn beer.

Pours rust colored with a soupy opacity and weightless colloidal lumps barely visible through the glass. A billowing head of marshmallow fluff begets lacy fractals. Hypnotic aromas enshroud the senses, too numerous to catalogue. I shall make the attempt, nonetheless: jasmine and gardenias, cherry/blueberry, herbal-grassy hops, bubblegum wrapper, perfume, burnt caramel, new cigar, fig, vanilla, rum, banana… a list by no means inclusive. The heady fragrance is so bewitchingly erotic that it reduces one’s intellect to babbling incoherence. Articulating the savory whirlwind of ensuing flavors proves an equally baffling task…sweet and fruity, candylike, kiwi and chocolate, licorice, pie crust, rosemary, Meyer lemon, 7-up, allspice. Simultaneously uplifting and humbling. The beer crackles with random exploding bubbles as it passes the lips, and fizzes into a rich symphony of taste that osmoses into every surface of the mouth, tongue, and throat. Numerous gelatinous floc-blobs distract from an otherwise flawless texture. Flirtatious alcohol expresses itself as a blossoming glow of euphoria. The aftertaste, a mingled aura of spearmint, cocoa, and Lucky Charms, concludes this enchanting, almost spiritual, experience. Mesmerizing and ultimately satisfying; as thrillingly pleasurable as foreplay, goosebumps, and piss shivers.

750ml bottle picked up at John’s in Iowa City. reddish amber with a fast shrinking tan head, disolves to a small ring of lace. ( appearance would have been scored higher except for the massive chunks of floaties. ) aroma and flavor is multi-dimensional and complex with lots of dried fruit, sweet caramel and mild hops. mouthfeel is full and soft without a ton of carbonation. never did notice the alcohol, even after it warmed to near room temp. very enjoyable
