Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

A cloudy, deep red-amber color, this has a sweet, fruity aroma. The flavor is not quite as sweet and yeasty as some of the top Belgians, but a very nice flavor, with a balance of malts, hops, and spice. Overall, greatly enjoyable.

I had higher expectations for this one as I had the Grand Cru recently and was pretty impressed with. Comparatively, this one was not as sweet, much hoppier, and has a spicier and deeper aftertaste. Very complex and tasty. Overall, an excellent brew.

Bottle at Frigo in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Poured a dark, hazy/translucent brownish amber color. Sweet, fruity, malty, nutty aroma... also had elements of dried fruits (cherries, dates, figs, raisins) and yeast. Rich complex flavors of dried fruits, carmelized sugars, yeast, malts, just a touch of hops at the finish. It’s hard to believe that there’s no added sugar in this brew. Completely amazing, a truly awesome experience.

Dark reddish color with a thick head. The aroma of sweet fruits and the taste of caramel and also of yeast. You cannot taste that much of the 9% alcohol.I tis a nice berr to have over and over again.

Clear amber body with ruby highlights and a pillowy, off-white head that fades to a lasting cover. Caramels, candi sugar, bananas, pears and golden raisins in the nose. The flavor is raisins, nutmeg, pears and candi sugar. Medium/full body with a rich velvety smooth texture.

Ruby color, some floaties I assume I did not pour it properly. As for the head, a perfect score, compact, creamy, sustainable, great carbonation. The nose is really fruity, reminds me of peaches in syrup, lots of esters, caramel and a whole lot more. A hint of sweetness, tangy/sour fruity acidity, and a long controlled elegant bitter finish. I was amazed how this beer manages to be quite bitter while this feature is never overwhelming. Not to mention a chewy sirupy body. Overall, and exceptionnal beer, comes close to Trappist standards in terms of complexity and balance.
