Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Pour a rich, opaque brown with brown head. Aroma is complex, very malty with plum and over-ripe fruit notes. Taste is similar, with some detectable roasted and chocolate character from the dark malts that really adds to the complexity of the beer. Slightly overly sweet for my palate, a little more bitterness could have helped the balance. Still very enjoyable.

Enjoyed on tap in a whiskey snifter. The sample pours a deep brown color, with a nice white head that lasts several minutes. The nose is one that is perhaps the best I’ve experienced since sampling beers of such ilk as St. Bernardus Abt 12. Caramel, German chocolate, and malty sweetness. The palate shows evidence that this beer goes through a long aging process, showing a malty beginning and center, followed by a slightly estery finish that is just a bit dry. Overall, an excellent Belgian Strong Dark.

Pours a dark brown colour with a cream coloured head. Hops can be seen floating in the beer. Aroma of dark fruits, brown sugar, candied sugar, caramel, and molasses. Flavour is the same as the aroma. Has a vinous quality. Reminiscent of the the Trappístes Rochefort but not as good.

Big bottle, Pours nice with a reddish brown color. Aroma is sweet but not over powering or memerable. Small cream white head is a nice addition to the beer appearance. Taste is pleasant with fruit flavors, soom sweetness like molasses and caramel. Malt comes through nicely with some spiciness from the hops. All in all a very nice Belgian strong.

Sweet and a bit "winey" fruitness as described. A bit of alcohol taste in there to warm you up. A great "middle of the road" belgian beer.

Bottled 33cl from crackedkettle.com. It pours a murky reddish dark brown beer with a beautiful, nicely lasting rich creamy light beige head. Coconut, candy sugar, molasses, blue cheese, aniseed, vanilla, hops, mango, pear, pumpernickel, plums and apricot showing up in the nose which is remarkably strong, mindblowingly pleasant and just simply fantastic! Sweet complex taste. Full bodied with a lot of candy sugar and caramel appearing with tropical fruits (which include coconut and mango) accompanying the sweet components. Extremely pleasant. Lively carbonation. Good lacework. Residual sugars in the finish which is mostly fruity and powerful, lingering for quite a while. Marvellous!
