Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Pours a slightly hazed mahogany with a tall creamy tan head that quickly fades to a skim and holds. Aroma is lots of wood, grape and earth notes before I even got close to the glass. Getting a little closer... caramel, fresh figs, plums, overripe red apple, wet soil, musty orange, spice, banana nut bread and hints of balsamic vinegar. Flavor is toasted wood, toasted grain, rich caramel, coffee, chocolate, earth, nutty toffee, wet leaves, banana bread, lots of fresh and dried dark fruits and burnt sugar. Finish is full of earth and wood notes, with plenty of burnt sugar and dark fruit just a hint of roast bitterness. Palate is lighter than the aroma would tell with a perfect effervescence and a nice dry feel throughout. Fantastic brew, rich aroma and flavor with a playfully light palate and well hidden high abv.... really great.

Sampled from a 750 ml green bottle this beer poured a dark orange-brown color with a large tan head. The aroma was tart apple and sugar. The flavor was tart, tangy and bitter with notes of apple and caramel and a hint of vinegar. The finish was medium length tart apple vinegar. Ok.

Sleeper bargain at Only Café in beautiful Greektown, Toronto. Nice lightly cloudy chestnut pour with tan foamy head, releasing a nose of fruity acidity and sweetness. Taste rich toffee-like malts, that beautiful tangy dark fruit, banana pie-spice and cola. Some demerera under the long, great lightly acidic finish. Extremely consistent impression from first whiff to last gulp, a real winner.

Dark, deep brown, almost black in appearance. Quite unsettled, despite a lot of standing time. Heavy, ripe fruit evident, particularly cherry and blackberry and quite vineous. Strong alcoholic flavour, sweet, but balanced enough to not be overpowering.

Gusher with many floaties. I am not a huge fan of the floaties. However, aroma of fruits, sugar and bread. Fruity taste with acidic aftertaste. Not bad.

750 mL bottle courtesy of StlWill. This was on my wantlist forever. Thanks! Best by 14/02/2011. Valentines day... how sweet! Pours a dark reddish brown color. Cloudy with huge floaties. Large frothy head with good head retention and some lacing, though the glass seems to be coating more by floatie sludge than last. Aroma of earthy malts, chocolate, brown sugar, bread, crayons, light fruit notes including cherry and apple. Taste is decidedly more fruity with definite notes of cherry, berries, apple, apricot. Also brown sugar, yeast, toffee, spice and almost sherrylike notes. Full bodied. The floaties definitely make their presence known on the palate. Very soft carbonation. All in all a very nice beer. 8/3/9/3/16

750 mL bottle at the Relentless Thirst Gathering in Richmond, VA, 8.29.09. 2005 vintage I think. Pours reddish copper with a medium head. Perpetual head retention and nice lacing. Aroma of slight funk, berries, cherries and raisins. Taste is caramel, other malty notes and light berry notes. Medium bodied. 8/4/9/4/17

[1856-20081112] 330mL bottle. Fruity heavy yeast aroma with heavy toasted perfume. Hazy, dark red amber body with no head and ridiculously huge chunky floaties. Heavy fruity yeast continues in the flavour again with heavy perfume. Medium body. Quite fruity.
