Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

[1856-20081112] 330mL bottle. Fruity heavy yeast aroma with heavy toasted perfume. Hazy, dark red amber body with no head and ridiculously huge chunky floaties. Heavy fruity yeast continues in the flavour again with heavy perfume. Medium body. Quite fruity.

750 mL bottle. Dark brown-reddish pour with a nice tan head. Aroma of barnyard, Belgian yeast, malt and plums. Great taste of yeast, malts, dark fruits and caramel. Fantastic, slight alcohol finish.

Bottle. Pours a gorgeous deep red with a quickly-dissipating tan head that left minor lacing on the glass. Aroma is more subtle than i anticipated, but i did get malt, candi sugar, and dark fruit. Taste, however, is an explosion, with malt up front dissolving into dark fruits such as plum, date, raisin, and lighter fruit like green apple. Finishes smooth and sweet. I really tasted the FARM on this one, too; the grain came out at just the right times. Alcohol barely noticeable. It’s delicious.

750ml bottle. Labeled "Brasserie des Rocs". Best before 2009. Sampled 3-28-09. Been wanting to try this one for a while and it’s certainly a wonderful Belgian strong ale. Pours a light murky brown with TONS of chunks & floaties....not just at the bottom of the bottle...right from the very first pour. More than I’ve ever seen before. Small tan head that dissipates to virtually no head and doesn’t leave much lacing. Malty, sweet, and very fruity. Runs the gamut on fruit flavors from sip to sip. The standard dark fruits such as raisins and figs, with notes of tangerine, banana, grapes, and apples. Absolutely delicious! Alcohol is undetectable in the taste. Mouthfeel is wonderful...creamy but not syrupy with a nice finish. Deserves its place right up there with other top-tier Belgian ales!

750mL bottle poured into a snifter, after getting this gusher under control. Pours a slightly murky reddish brown that shows amber when held up to the light. There are plenty of floaties in there and the head is large and lingers for quite a while, leaving a little bit of lacing. The aroma is big with tons of sweet dark malts and lots of dark fruits, especially raisins and figs. There seems to be a molasses sweetness as well. There is a bit of an alcohol burn in the nose as well. The taste was great, much like the aroma. Tastes like raisins soaked in a highly sugary alcohol. The malt base is still dominant throughout and though I mention the sweetness, it’s definitely not overpowering as in some versions of the style. The mouthfeel is velvety smooth with plenty of carbonation. This is a nice example of a Belgian brown, one of the better I’ve had recently. I definitely feel lucky to be able to walk into my local shop and pick this up whenever I want. Good stuff.

Pours red/brown with a substantial but quickly dispersing tan coloured head. Nose is quite vinous, red and dark fruits in abundance, supported well by sweet caramel & toffee malt. Palate translates well, with the fruit a little more reserved than on the nose. Sweet malt dominates with an almost woody, nutty character evident, probably from the yeast. Finish is rather long and faintly sweet.
