Commercial Description:
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Bottle from BOE 30-09-07 Poured mid-brown with a tan head. Aroma was bursting with fruits and nuts, plus some roasty malts. Tasted of the aforementioned fruits and nuts with a big ol’ pinch of nutmeg thrown into this sticky, sweet, spicy brew. I rather liked this and consider it a fine beer but I’m a little surprised at how highly it’s rated, maybe I should get another and try it again.

Dark brown with a lot of visible sediment and a large, but quickly diminishing head. The ale goes down very smooth, with a plethora of taste on the palate. There is a bit of smoky malts and caramel. This is mixed with a prunish accent and a sugary alcohol in the background. The aftertaste lingers. Very good.

Bottle at Smokeless Joe, Toronto, July 2007. Pours red orange with a wonderful aroma of plum, raisin, orange. The flavour is super dense, complex dark fruit, raisin, plum, sugar, candy, spices.

Pours an orange brown with fizzy head and risidual sediment. Aroma holds apple cider, some raisin, plum, and yeast. Flavor has brown sugar, molasses, malt, and dried apricots. Tingly mouthfeel with sweetness and a dry finish. Very impressive shift between aroma and flavor. Very nice brew.

750ml bottle shared with Lee. Pours a cloudy reddish brown with a quickly dissipating white head. Aroma is sweet candy and malt, unbelievable that this has no sugar added to it. Sweet malt candy taste with hints of fruit. Very smooth and tasty, finishes clean and gives no hint to its strength. Very good.
