GreatLibations (1260), Sasquatcho, Arizona, USA Aug 28, 2006 When I poured this I knew I was in for a treat. Just the sight of it proposed a unique brew to be reckoned with. When they say brewed for a king, it’s right on the money. This is the epitome of Belgian decadence.
Pours dark honey w/ a full rise semi creamy froth. Aromas of candied gravel and fruited spice. Full nectar w/ soft residual effers. Flavors are fuller than your usual Tripel with banana, stone fruit, spice, honey, vanilla, and heavy cream. This is truely awsome. Well balanced, no alcohol detection though it’s 10%, wow! Not too sweet, not to dry. This is the perfect brew when you’re trying to get away from the malted hop bombs but still want to overindulge. For as big as it is, it is a refined brew. I am at a new level of awareness from this point on. andrewboss (126), USA Aug 21, 2007 Bottle... this is not a beer - it’s an experience. Pours a light brown color with a light brown head. Sweet aroma. Fruity flavor - something tropical (papaya?). One of the best beers I’ve ever had. Simply great! dwyerpg (2042), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Jan 31, 2006 Dark, brown, chocolaty, sweet. It makes me think of doppelsticke, actually. I knew the bartender was wrong we he tried to tell me this was a tripel by Bernadhus, so I’m glad I found the owner, found out the truth and ordered it. Fantastic, truly fantastic. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Apr 17, 2005 Plummy dark brown with big yeasties dropping to the bottom like fish food. Cap is dense, growing with a firm foamyness colored of yellowed taupe with a dusted cinnamon brown center. Intricate lacing coats in tiny dots and other bigger cobweb webbings.
Aroma comes across pretty thick with big fruits and light spices. Lush and booming, yet soft and delicate as bread. Spicy dates and figs coated in oily earthy seeds of black licorice, poppy, pepper, ginger, and corriander. Small inticingly little tid bits of orange and raisin oil along with some touches of tobacco bring more complexities as it sits.
Flavors are big too; thick, lush, full body, favorable breadyness about its weight. Dark fruits decorate most of the tastes with rich and oily dates, figs, and raisins. Some dark orange touches the finishing qualities. Nicely handled and mild toned spices decorate the areas where the fruits leave off. So very well placed and a perfect compliment to the fruits. Cracked pepper, black licorice, ginger root, smokey vanilla, and tobacco are all put lightly in there place as not to distract from the fruit cake thickness.
Big full body, lush, rich, tender, fruity and spicy, oily in some respects closer to the leftover finishing characteristics. Very actively full from start to finish. Boisterously so. A truly enjoyable sipper. Take your time with this one, its worth it. Extravagantly fantastic stuff! xen_the_m0nk (101), Oregon, USA Jul 6, 2007 Absolutely love this ale. Totally different than other BSA’s, but overall, its just so enjoyable. VERY malty ale, lots of overripe fruit, plums. raisins, dates, yeast in the nose and flavor. Very balanced. Mouthfeel is smooth and not too much alchohol burn for a 10%er. Very well done!
