Commercial Description:
This is another Abbey Brewing Co. house recipe. This strong Trappist Style Ale is reminiscent of the winter ales brewed in the Belgium Monastery's centuries ago. This beer is brown in color and has a complexity of flavors ranging from dark chocolate to caramelized raisons with a hint of toffee. 11-12%ABV.

Murky purplish-brown. Fruity, bubblegummy nose. Deeply fruity - sour cherries, blackberry, some earthy notes. Stiff alcoholic finish. Big, chewy, fruity.

Draft... Clear ruby ale with orange highlights and a small, creamy, white head. Decent retention. The nose is full of sweet malt, fruity esters and tangy acids. The fruity flavor is medium sweet, moderately tart and lightly bitter. Full-bodied with a syrupy mouthfeel and fizzy carbonation. Lengthy, tart, tangy finish that dries out. Reminds me a bit of the New Glarus Unplugged Belgian Quad.

Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Smells of figs, spice, dark fruit. Tastes thick and malty with lots of spicy hints, some dark fruit, hints of clove. Decent.

My Bottom Line:
Orange and cherry syrup topple the chocolatey and caramel malts of this near-cloying Quadrupel. If you do not have a sweet tooth, you might have trouble going through this overabundant example.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-The Belgian mouthfeel is accurate, intense carbonation and all.
-A veil of foam sinks into the brownish ruby.
-Candied fruitiness explodes here, from cranberries to prunes to cherries, etc.
-Stale yeastiness (or is it DMS?) hides beneath that intense sweetness.

On tap at the brewpub.

Draft at Abbey. Poured a dark brown color with an average creamy off-white head that mostly lasted and produced fair lacing. Medium to heavy complex yeasty and fruity aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Good complex bittersweet flavor with a medium sweet & sour finish of moderate duration. Good complex brew.

(Draught at Abbey Brewing Company, Miami Beach) Hazy amber color, offwhite head. Lots of figs and raisins in aroma, smoked notes, some toffe and with a vinous feeling. Fruity fig and raisin flavor, some spices, some hops, a bit vinous.

Oh hell yes. This is a great beer brewed by a great guy. Certainly has aromas of candy and fruit. Very delicious.
