Commercial Description:
This is Abbey Brewing Co's special house recipe. The beer is amber in color with a balance of malt grown in the Midwest and hops grown in the Pacific Northwest.

Golden ale...small head. Aroma of malts and citrus. Midwest malts and Northwest hops make up this IPA. Some grapefruit hop and citrus notes but not a big west coast monster by any stretch, but tasty. On tap at brewery Jan 07’.

Honey-gold color with thick but small head. Soft, creamy mouthfeel. Served perhaps a little too cold at the Abbey, distracting from its character and muting the nose and flavors for a long time. Even as it warms, the nose takes some coaxing. Flavors are grassy and subtle. A popular beer at the Abbey.

23 oct 07. Draft @ Abbey Brewing Co. in Miami Beach. Orange color, white head. Aroma of malt. Flavor of rich malts balanced with a bitter hop bite. Finish is very bitter. I really enjoyed this IPA.

Draft at ABC. Soft, off-white, well retained head, good lacing. Clear orange body. The aroma is miniscule, but mostly pleasant. Equal parts apricot, orange, pineapple and grapefruit. Very little malt present. Toffee cake and very minor alcohol round out the nosing. Flavor is more like an ESB. Hops are barely competent; this is certainly on a bittering component budget. Sweetness is mild, acidity is low and scattered. Semi-sweet overall. Creamy mouthfeel, but with awful carbonation and watery pockets, weird. Finishes somewhat balanced. Very unimpressive.

on tap-pours an off white head and gold? Color. Aroma is faint hops. Taste is hops bite, medium malt, close to crossing over to APA. Good carbonation. Easy drinking IPA/APA.

Draft... Clear golden ale with a small, fizzy, white head. The aroma is of toffee, subtle grapefruit and mild evergreen. The flavor offers sweet toffee and biscuit with light grapefruit bitterness. Medium to full-bodied and creamy with stinging carbonation. Bitter-sweet, grassy finish. A good English IPA confused by PNW hopping.

My Bottom Line:
Sweet orangey hops are cleanly dissipated into a timid, grainy finish in this surprisingly feeble American IPA.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A quasi-absent nose for an American IPA is more than disappointing.
-A ring of foam surrounds the light amber.
-Some resinous hops remain approachable.
-There is a much better American IPA example at Titanic Brewing, near the University of Miami.
-After reading other ratings, I wonder if this beer varies considerably from batch to batch.

On tap at the brewpub.

On tap at the brewpub. Poured a clear medium amber with almost no head. Lighter nose, yet crisp.. with grapefruit and caramel representin’. Flavor was more potent, with lots of grapefruit, citrus, and grassy hoppage, slight graininess, and enough smooth caramel as a base. Crisp, smooth, and well-balanced on the palate. Good stuff.
