Commercial Description:
Abbey Ale honors the ancient tradition of monks who perfected the art of brewing beer to support the monastery and the brothers with their "liquid bread". We offer up our support and thank them with a 25 cent donation to St. Joseph’s Abbey with every bottle of this heavenly brew. Dark in amber color, the aroma of caramel, fruits and cloves invites you to contemplate the creamy head of this "dubbel" or double ale. Abita Abbey Ale is a malty brew, top-fermented and bottle aged to rapturous perfection.

Bottle sampled at SF International Beer Fest. Pretty average Belgian dubbel. Dark amber color with a cream-colored head. Aroma is malt, dark fruits, caramel, and brown sugar. Flavor is more of the same, with raisin/fig notes and some banana/clove. Medium body with a dry finish.

Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is dark fruits and brown sugar. Flavor is nice, with a little bit of roasted malt along with flavors of banana and spice. Not bad for how cheap it was.

650 ml bottle. Pours a cherry brown with a creamy, light tan head. Boozy fruit, yeast, raisin, mineral notes, and a little vegtativeness on the nose. Medium carbonation with a medium mouthfeel. The alcohol is pretty prominent in this one. Fruity on the palate, with apricot playing the dominant role. Slight bitterness, spice, and a taste I can’t quite place. A touch of mineral and earth? Medium-long finish with the fruit flavor lingering.

Dark brown with a cm of tan head. Gingery spice notes with slight sweet and sourness. Taste is the same with clove, citrus, raisins and roast into the finish. Not a prototypical dubbel, but not bad either. $6/22oz

Amber pour with a half-inch off-white head. Malty nose with a dash of fruit. Malty flavor, slightly tangy, with a touch of dried figs and candi sugar. Not a bad approximation of the style. Pretty tasty.

Bomber from Hi-Time. Pours a brownish amber with a decent off-white head providing okay lacing. Aromas of dark fruity esters, some spice and candy/bubblegum typical for the style. Flavor follows suit, dark fruit (raisin), slight clovey spice with the brown sugar finish. Mouthfeel was fairly heavy, but seemed a bit lighter for the style. Overall this is a pretty good dubbel, and for the price, is worth picking up.

Bottle pours a sticky, lacing off-white head with a nice, pure amber body. Smells is of yeast, barnyard, and brown sugar. Little clove. Flavor is of raisin, fig, and clove.
