Commercial Description:
Abbey Ale honors the ancient tradition of monks who perfected the art of brewing beer to support the monastery and the brothers with their "liquid bread". We offer up our support and thank them with a 25 cent donation to St. Joseph’s Abbey with every bottle of this heavenly brew. Dark in amber color, the aroma of caramel, fruits and cloves invites you to contemplate the creamy head of this "dubbel" or double ale. Abita Abbey Ale is a malty brew, top-fermented and bottle aged to rapturous perfection.

Ruddy color, clear, with a decent sized white head. Very clove-y, with a weird aluminum component as well. Bubblegum, fruit, and (bad) wine like flavor, with a ton of carbonation.

Bottle. Reddish pour. Alcohol is pretty apparent for only 8%. Close to the style fruit-wise.

Bottle… Dark, clear, ruby-colored ale with a mid-sized, creamy, off-white head. The aroma presents clove and sorghum light-molasses with smidgens of date and dried plum. Medium-bodied with tickling carbonation. The flavor is well-balanced and hints at dark fruit, but is fairly benign and has a strange mineral component… kind of like sucking on a rock while chewing on a piece of tree bark. Lengthy, minerally, mildly bitter finish. Not at all horrible, but something I won’t do again.

Deep amber, fairly clear, slight head fades off quickly. Aroma is sweet, a bit candy sugar accented, with faint clove and fruit. Flavor is simultaneously sweet and the body strikes one as being a bit thin - a hard trick to pull off. Light clove, faint dark fruit. Very so-so. Very attractive bottle, wish the contents had stood up to the packaging.

22oz bomber - pours an amber color with a thin tan head. Aroma of raisin, caramel, spice and brown sugar. Taste is a nice sweet, malty ale with some caramel, spices and sweetness. This is a smooth Dubbel and very, very enjoyable. One of my favorite Abita’s to date. I would definitely drink this one again.

My Bottom Line:
Overtly yeasty, especially in the nose, this Dubbel attempt offers lightly tart fruit and generic sugars paired with spicy and leafy hop bitterness.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A fluffy sheet of foam covers the cloudy amber.
-This is drinkable for its strength, but it’s really forgettable and not like any good abbey brew I’ve had.
-The body is rather lean and the carbonation cushiony.
-The fruity character is not that presonable, reminiscent of diluted berries, perhaps.

Bottle.

Bomber. Pours a dark brownish garnet with thin, but sturdy, beige head. The aroma is fresh cherries, raisin, clove, deck stain, brown sugar, and yeasty bread. The flavor is caramelized sugar, raisin, husky wild cherries, clove, and a little bit of bitter chocolate. After a few seconds it takes on a sort of woody hazelnut character that is quite interesting, along with a powerful yeast presence. The finish has a light zesty dryness to it. Not too bad, I must admit.

Cloying and clovy but reasonable price for this type. Unmemorable so perhaps I should not of waited months to rate it.
