Commercial Description:
Abbey Ale honors the ancient tradition of monks who perfected the art of brewing beer to support the monastery and the brothers with their "liquid bread". We offer up our support and thank them with a 25 cent donation to St. Joseph’s Abbey with every bottle of this heavenly brew. Dark in amber color, the aroma of caramel, fruits and cloves invites you to contemplate the creamy head of this "dubbel" or double ale. Abita Abbey Ale is a malty brew, top-fermented and bottle aged to rapturous perfection.

The smell on this one is of bad trash and when you swirl the glass it becomes heavily infused with a cream corn aroma. Disgusting. The look is the only aspect of this beer that is very good. It pours a medium brown with hints of orange on the edges when held to light. Taste is sour and not in a good way, and there are some off/funky flavors here too, also not in a good way. There is vinegar and cider present that tastes rotten as well. THIS IS BAD and after about 1oz I drainpoured the remainder of my sample.

On the nose I get a sweet candied sugar/fruit smell. Pours a darker amber color. Medium bodied On the palate I get candied sugar, fruit, slight hops some malt and a lot of grain. Very grainy beer. Stays around nicely thougb and doesn’t leave the palate too quickly either.

Pours dark caramel with a smal head. Aroma is funky sour dried fruit. Mouthfeel is thick and smooth with fairly low carbonation. Flavor is nice with heavy bread and dried fruit charactgeristics. A slight bit of bitterness and alcohol follow. A little harsher than some dubbels, but very good.

Slightly hazy garnet with a big, pillowy beige head. Aroma is caramely and sweet with some bready and fruity notes. Flavor is rich, with loads of doughy sweetness, no hops, and a lingering caramel finish. Palate is thin despite the full flavor. Alcohol not noticeable at all. Nice dubbel.

Bomber from BevMo Salinas. Nose is caramel, candi sugar, light fruit, and a light smoky note. Clear rusty red with a big, heavily lacing, beige head. Flavor is light sweetness, caramel, a light bitter note, and some alcohol warmth. Decent Dubbel! Better than most of the other Abita’s I’ve had.

Sampled from the bottle: Pours a dark but translucent copper colour with a very large beige head. Aroma is caramel, sweet notes and biscuit malts. Taste is rich and semi sweet and really toasty. Mouthfeel is super pleasent, just the right amount of carbonation making this beer creamy and soft all around. Easily my favourite from Abita. If you spot this beer, pick it up!"

22oz. bomber. Pours a deep garnet with orange and ruby highlights. The head pours medium-thick and light tan in color. Slight lacing is left on the glass. Aroma is thick with bready, doughy yeast and fruit (dates, peaches, raisins). The flavor follows the aroma: fruity and yeasty. But there is also a nice bready, sweet malt character and some touches of spice - overall rather cakey. The finish has a build-up of spice and yeast and a touch of surprisingly pointed hop bitterness. It is balanced on the sweet side, but ethanol and hops in the end definitely give it a slight bitter punch. The after-taste is malty and spicy. The ethanol is warming as it goes down. The mouthfeel is quite full in body with a sudsy and slippery texture that is briskly carbonated but slightly less carbonated than expected for style. Overall, it has some good qualities, but seems to be missing something to bring it all together. It is also slightly lacking in smoothness - the alcohol seems a bit rough. Aging this for a year would probably improve it.
