Commercial Description:
Abbey Ale honors the ancient tradition of monks who perfected the art of brewing beer to support the monastery and the brothers with their "liquid bread". We offer up our support and thank them with a 25 cent donation to St. Joseph’s Abbey with every bottle of this heavenly brew. Dark in amber color, the aroma of caramel, fruits and cloves invites you to contemplate the creamy head of this "dubbel" or double ale. Abita Abbey Ale is a malty brew, top-fermented and bottle aged to rapturous perfection.

22 oz bottle, via BA Floydster. Clear amber pour with a tight beige head, minimal visible carbonation. The nose is pretty muddled, a mix of caramel malts, alcohol, yeast, and an odd earthiness. The flavor is dry caramel malt with a touch of yeast derived fruitiness, but it’s a little too thin and grainy. A little alcohol heat on the back end. It actually kinda reminded me of maple syrup. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and a little sticky with an odd heavy candi sugar finish. Light soft carbonation. This just didn’t seem to come together for me. It suffers from all kinds of corner cutting in the recipe I think.

Pour is a dark brown with a large tan head. Aroma is nice with lots of candi sugar, sweet dark fruit and a spice. Flavor is about the same just a little less noticable. Dark sugar is there plenty and leaves a sweetness on the tounge. Still i can’t really knock this as its a worthy effort.

22 oz. bottle from BevMo - Pours a slightly hazy deep amber color with a two finger thick light tan head. Light lacing. Aroma is esters, spice, yeast, and sweet candy. Flavor is sweet esters. Almost cloying. Medium to full body. Alcohol is noticeable. A decent beer.

bottle, amber color with overflowing foam, aroma of yeasty sugar, flavor starts off well as a typical dubbel but gets very weak very fast, plain overall

Pours dark amber with creamy off-white head. Dark fruit and candy yeast very prevalent in the aroma. Taste is full of spice and dark fruit. Decent brew.

Bomber. Poured clear reddish-orange with a short, fizzy cap of tan head. The aroma was quite sour overall with lighter fruits leading.. some fruity meat, orange zest, cinnamon, and cardamom followed.. spicier yet as it warmed up. The flavor had lighter fruit meat, caramel, and a pinch of honey at the core with lots of spices around (cinnamon, white pepper, and cardamom came to mind).. bitterness was light-to-moderate and earthy.. finished sticky, spicy, and quite sweet. Medium-bodied and well-carbonated on the palate.. very spicy and somewhat phenolic, but it maintained composure for the most part.. warmed up the belly. Decent offering.

Bottle. Hazy deep amber pour with a moderate off-white head. Aroma has mild spices and pepper up front, slight Belgian yeast notes. Taste is pretty much the same, with some caramel sweetness backed by spicy malts. Perhaps a bit too sweet, but not bad.

at the first whiff of this aroma, it hit me hard. the spices were strong and flavorful and even a touch of steak sauce. it looks great with a dark reddish brown. the taste is strong and malty with lots of peppery spices. the finish leaves you with a strong pepper taste that lingers all the way.
