Nose is sweet malts and light earthy hops. Taste is pretty much the same with some citrus in the finish. Lighter mouth feel. Best offering I’ve had from Abita to-date. I didn’t know what to expect from this beer. Had on draft at Beerfest on Bourbon St. New Orleans. Decent head, not too heavy. Has a bit of an abbey aroma, spiced and fruity. Drinks a bit like a barleywine, so I can’t put this in a category. Overall, I really enjoyed it. I haven’t had too much great stuff from abita, but this trip changed my perception. Tasted like some kind of Belgian/golden hybrid. This beer would make a good session beer. cbkschubert (2002), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA

Clear golden with a small lasting head that leaves some soapy lace. Aromas of light spicy corn and caramel grain. Flavor has less corn, but pretty similar. Toasted nut, grain and light alcohol provide most of the drying, with a hint of wheat and resin-citrus flavors on the finish. Near-medium body is dryish and lightly tingly. Very drinkable; not great, but not terrible. thehoop (1), , Missouri, USA does not count | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 5, 2008 mazing beer, it lives up to the very definition of a doppelbock.
"The flavor is very rich and malty, with toasty flavors and noticeable alcoholic strength. Most versions are fairly sweet, due to little or no hop flavor. Paler versions may have a drier finish."
It has malt flavor, it is just drier than most doppelbock beers you know. Most doppelbocks end with "ator". I really like how abita makes the beer uniquely Louisiana by naming it gator. Great beer.
